    Raphael catfish

I have two raphaels and one female bristlenose in a 240L. 99.9% of the time, they ignore one another. They only get into arguments when I put algae wafers in the tank. Someone on PlanetCatfish recently posted photos of a spotted raphael (Agamyxis pectinfrons), which had gotten injured after an...

    Fluval Roma 125 Litre Stocking

Bigger is always better, if you have space/budget for it. For the 125, I would personally cut out one or two of those shoaling fish schools. I have a single male Bolivian ram living with some cherry barbs and green laser corys in a 110L tank. He does fine. You need lots of tank space and...

I don't know. Mine ignores the corys, but it's a female. Males of most pleco species are territorial about caves because they will protect the eggs and fry in said cave, whereas females are less so.

I think you'd be fine, especially if you do weekly large water changes. If you rehome anything, it would make more sense for it to be the livebearers, since you say you have soft water.

That looks like a fairly standard algae wafer, whereas those JBL ones are designed specifically for the wood-eating loricariids (there are many). My clown pleco loves her wood wafers, but when I put normal algae wafers in her tank, not for her but for otos I had in there at the time, she never...

I also give mine one of these once per week-ish. https://www.pro-shrimp.co.uk/fish-food/637-jbl-novopleco-250ml-4014162005755.html Any kind of soft wood. It's just hardwoods like mopani that they can't quite manage. If you have to tie your log down with some rocks, it's probably a good bet.

They're super shy, especially if they have plenty of wood to hide in while eating. I can go days without seeing her. Now that I've had her for over a year, she'll briefly pop into view, but mostly stays out of sight. Clown plecs are not as active and sociable in daylight as Ancistrus. I would...

    Help with care and ID

It looks like a clown pleco, or Panaque maccus. I'm not 100% sure. Maybe 90%. Someone else will back that up, or not! If I'm right, it will only get to 4" long. I have one living in a 29g tank, along with cherry barbs, some corys, and a Bolivian ram. So there's no need for you to rehome it...

Yay for Brexit! (this is really about aquatic plants)

Prior to the creation of the EEC (European Economic Community) in 1957, which was the precursor to the EU formed in part due to the desire of the European countries to not do the whole world war thing again, and in part due to concerns about the Soviet Union, no, there was no real free trade...

Yay for Brexit! (this is really about aquatic plants)

The UK has *always* had centralized power in a way the US does not. It's called Parliamentary democracy. Has nothing to do with socialism -- it evolved in kind of a slow, muddled way a few hundred years before anyone invented that idea. The majority party in Parliament and the Prime Minister...

Yay for Brexit! (this is really about aquatic plants)

No, nothing to do with socialism. Brexit is capitalism on steroids. 'Disaster capitalism.' The people behind it stand to make a lot of money through hedge funds, venture capital firms, and of course, being able to shift capital off-shore into tax havens outwith EU curbs on such behaviour. It's...

Your tank looks amazing, as ever. I love your updates and photos. Puts my tanks to shame. As far as the other stuff goes, remember, 'user ignore' is your friend. Corydora staying in the corner of the tank

It's likely to be false julii, or C. trilineatus, because julii corys, C. julii, are very rare in the hobby. Doesn't really matter (unless you want to breed), since corys will shoal with other species of corys, especially conspecifics. However, they should be on sand and ideally, in a larger...

    Fish keeping ethics - species

Aye. Most of the staff at my nearest Maidenhead seem pretty unenthusiastic. They definitely give an air of being people who just needed a job. There's one further away which has a couple staff members who are clearly enthusiasts, but at that point, I might as well schlep to the small independent...

My 10gal quarantine tank to become a display

Yeah, my 30L quarantine tank became a fry tank when the black corys spawned, but our fry attrition rate was far too high, so the obvious solution was to make it into a full time, fully cycled display tank that could house cory fry as needed. So we got it some plants, wood, and Microdevario...

    Fish keeping ethics - species

@DAnCSF, Certain species (i.e. raphael catfish, L239 plecos...and undoubtedly many others I don't know about) are always going to be wild caught, because no one knows how to reliably breed them in captivity. Otherwise, use a fish shop where the owners are on the ground, doing day to day retail...

    Fish keeping ethics - species

The wild caught thing isn't that simple or clear cut (no pun intended). The thing is... wild caught aquarium fish, as an industry, sustain remote communities in places like the Amazon that would otherwise have to turn to agriculture or mining in order to survive. If you are able to eke out a...

    What pleco is the best?

240 gallon?? If I had a tank that big, I would look at the sailfins or royals. Those are cool fish, and you can't have them unless you have a huge tank.

    A Scottish Lament

That's the art of flute and whistle playing -- using your breath as kind of an ornament. I'm a bit pants at that, since I'm more of a piper than a whistle player. Ft. Collins has a few sessions and some good players. No idea where you are in Wyoming (it's a big state, LOL), but it's there if...

    A Scottish Lament

I'm mainly a session player (back in those distant days when we could have sessions ) . So I learn what's played at sessions -- jigs and reels (and sporadic hornpipes, strathspeys, etc.). Taught myself early in my playing journey to pick up dance tunes relatively quickly. Scottish...

  31. Gypsum

    A Scottish Lament

Yeah, I figured. Don't play it myself as I'm pretty lazy about learning airs -- prefer jigs, reels, strathspeys, etc., and then never get around to slow stuff, but it's a lovely tune.

    Bamboo Shrimp

Yeah, you really do need a current for them to thrive. I have two in my 125L tank, which is getting blasted with three powerheads. The bamboo shrimp will either sit in front of the biggest powerhead, or sit on top of the powerheads filter feeding. I would follow NCAquatics suggestion and move...

    240L tank

They're big corys. CW006 or narcisso cory. The dark grey ones are CW045s. The raphaels are very lucky that I like them. They're pretty, but they've eaten a few small fish in their time. I'm holding them responsible for my slowly-decreasing rummynose tetra shoal.

    240L tank

Took this wee video of my 240L (roughly 63 US gallons). The aquascaping isn't as great as NCAquatics, but I'm pleased with my newest inhabitants, the big black and white CW006 corys.

My phone saves them with the file extension .MOV. I've transferred it onto the computer, but the forum doesn't recognise that as a valid file extension for upload.

Yeah, the salt may be your problem. They can tolerate small amounts of salt for a short period of time, like if you're treating something, but they can't cope with it long term.

    Cory deaths (and not pandas)

I'm fuzzy on the chemistry here, but could the lack of nitrates be attributed to whatever is (or isn't) in the tap water and have nothing to do with crashed cycles? My nitrates always show up as 0 on the API liquid test kit. Without fail. I don't think the tanks are crashing. Stefan, what's...
