need help figuring out what to do with my sisters betta

Can you get a breeder box/tank that can float inside your 20gallon tank? You can a get a big breeder box example: 20x10cm or larger and hang it near your filter outflow. Or you can get an airstone and put it inside or directly below the breeder tank for the water inside to be refreshed...

    Cover fish tank with blanket?

Can you get a tank's lid to cover it? If not, get some black plastic sheets to cover it. Or you can DIY some black plastic or cardboards/boxes to cover it. The easiest way is to turn off your 40W when you sleep at night. Replace it with a small lamp or bulb.

    Cover fish tank with blanket?

Do you mean you leave your lights on at night when you are sleeping? You should turn off your lights when you sleep at night for the fish to rest and sleep. You can use a small light if you really need to turn on your light at night. For me, I use a small 1W LED bulb (it's an Ikea table lamp...

    Alternative Nitrate Reduction Method$

Thanks for your well written explanations and suggestions on how to reduce nitrate. By the way, I was wondering if you have a lot of fast growing plants that can remove the ammonia, then probably you will have less nitrate as you will skip these stages of ammonia-> nitrite-> nitrate. But I...

    Algea Bloom

It looks like green water to me. Do a large water change. Use a UV sterilizer. Reduce your light duration to less than 8 hours and use a lower wattage light. Algae growth is mostly due bright light and long duration of light. What is your lighting wattage? You can read here for more info...

    Help. Worms

Actually most parasites are too small to be seen with our eyes except for anchor worms. I guess you are seeing detritus worms that are harmless. When you have leftover food, they will grow more. Just put some fish and they will eat them all. Other pests are like Hydra and planaria that...

    Help. Worms

Actually most fish with mouth big enough to eat the worms will eat them. What fish do you have in your tank right now? You can try putting some of your Tetras or Danios or Gouramis in the tank.

    Reverse Osmosis Water

Your tap water looks ok for Dojo Loaches and Neon Tetras. You can check the website of your water agency for their water analysis report if you want to find out what is inside the tap water. By the way, take note high power/intensity light and with long duration will promote much algae growth...

    Water level….

Actually it depends on a few factors: 1)Does your tank has a lid? For a tank without lid, the water level need to be lower, otherwise, the fish especially top level fish will jump out. For a tank with lid, you need to leave some space for Betta or Gourami (all Anabantid) fish to breathe from...

I've been taken by the Dark Side...I'm lovin' the Shrimp!

Shrimps are interesting. If you can get the Sulawesi shrimps especially the White socks, their colours are amazing. But they require special Sulawesi minerals with RO water.

    Filter problem

Did you fill it up with water? You have to fill it up with water before turning on the switch. It won't be able to start without water. If the filter has no water, it may damage the motor.

    Betta mahachai

As Avel mentioned, having two males will mostly likely ended with injury/death for one or both. If you really want to keep two males, you must be prepared to have an extra tank in case they don't work out. According to one wild Betta(Mahachai, Imbellis, Smaragdina, etc) breeder's advice, you...

I can’t keep them alive! At all!

What are the symptoms before they died? It's best if you can show us some photos of the fish. Whenever you buy a fish, look for healthy fish that are free from symptoms of disease. Always, observe the fish and other fish in the same tank before buying them. Avoid fish that are breathing fast...

What "extra" Fish equipment do you keep on hand?

I have extra sets of almost everything from filters to tanks.... Some basic medications are a must especially if you are buying new fish,,,, But thankfully, I have a fish shop nearby that operates 24 hours....

Seriously regretting decision to let snails breed...

You are right. Just do a good clean up by removing all the dead snails and do a large water change after the medication. You can do it probably 1-2 days before you do your weekly water change.

I must have upset the fish gods

It's best to treat the ich and ensure that they are all killed before putting in the Corydoras. Corydoras are scaless fish and they don't do well with most medications and salt. It will become more complicated to treat Corydoras if they have ich.
  24. Lajos_Detari

Seriously regretting decision to let snails breed...

Actually it's easy to kill snails by using Coppersafe(which is used to treat white spot disease). But make sure that you don't have shrimps in your tank now or in the future, else the Coppersafe will kill the shrimps.

40 gallon breeder or 55 gallon tall?

What are the tanks' dimensions and what fish will you keep? Longer tank is usually better to give the fish more space to swim and avoid each other. Taller tank will be useful if you decide to keep tall fish like Angel or Discus fish.

    New beta one Gill flared

Yes, high ammonia may cause gill issues as ammonia will burn the gills and is toxic to the fish. When your tank is not fully cycled, you need to do more water changes frequently. Some info for you to read: https://www.thesprucepets.com/treat-fish-for-ammonia-burns-2925396

Community Tank Turning Yellow and Slowly Dying off

I am suspecting the same as AdoraBelle - velvet disease.(parasite) Turn off the light and use a torchlight to check for gold or rusty colour on their skin. Any skin peeling off(advance stage)? Treat with Coppersafe if you can confirm that it's velvet. All tanks that share the same net, siphon...

    New beta one Gill flared

25% of water change is too low. Change at least 70% or more. Just remember, if you have 1.0 ppm ammonia, changing 50% water will reduce by half to 0.5 ppm ammonia.

    Corydoras pygmaeus colony breeding, surprise!

By the way, if you really want fish that are safe for shrimplets, you can consider these(all soft water fish) 1)Chili/Mosquito Rasboras 2)Boraras Maculatus 3)Blue Axelrodi Rasboras (maybe - never keep before) Other fish will most likely eat the shrimplets. Stay away from Tetras except probably...

    Corydoras pygmaeus colony breeding, surprise!

Yes, Apisto & Rams are beautiful and interesting. Apisto have very nice fins and tail shape but they are not so colourful. Recently, I restarted keeping Apisto again after having bad experience of gill flukes that killed many of my Apisto in the past. But now I realized that they are not so...

Carbon cartridge and filter part alternatives?

Since you have ordered the carbon cartridge, you can keep it for future use. Carbon is usually used only after you have used medication. By the way, since your tank is a second hand tank, I would advise you to do a good cleaning of the tank and filter in case there are some nasty parasites eggs...

Carbon cartridge and filter part alternatives?

If it's a top or overhead filter or some called it a trickle filter, you can arrange this way: 1)Top layer - Filter floss You can change this layer when it gets too dirty or it clog the water flow or if it's breaking apart. This layer is for mechanical filtration or to remove all the debris...

What lighting are you using or what is the wattage and hour many hours you turn on per day. Actually best plant for shrimplets is Java Moss. Which type of stand?

I only bought proper aquarium's cabinet and stand for bigger tank. Big aquariums are heavy and I won't compromise on the safety. The tanks also look better with proper cabinet and stand. For small tank(less than 2ft/60cm length), I used some Ikea side tables which have thick woods support.

How does one afford this hobby??

I guess you spend the most at the initial start up from the aquarium, aquarium cabinet/stand, filters, heater, lighting and probably also from expensive sand or gravel and driftwoods. If you can source for cheap aquarium, aquarium cabinet/stand, filters and lighting, it will save you quite a...

Sorry, I realized that your centerpiece will be Peacock Gudgeons. Peacock Gudgeons can grow up to 3 inches whereas Chili Rasboras are very tiny at 1.5-2cm only. The adult Gudgeons look aggressive and big. I think for Gudgeons, it's better to go for bigger fish such as Espei Rasboras or Green...
