    getting rid of the green

I have a serious algae problem, by that i mean my water is green. I've heard that an increased level of CO2 will help plants grow, so if i was to adjust my internal fiter so there was less/no surface movement in theory this would make the level of co2 rise. is this correct? Would doing this...

    making substrate

i wouldn't use anything that is designed for use outside of an aquarium. It might release chemicals into the water that may be harmful to fish.

    Removing juwel filters??

if you haven't ordered yet, may i recommend you take a look at the Fluval Duo Deep 1200, and use the juwel stand with it. This may be easier as they dont have anything fixed into them in the first place, and can be much easier to upgrade (if needed) Just a thought. sf

    Where to buy ammonia

it might be ok, aslong as you can stand the smell, and you change all the water...twice...maybe even three or four times(just to make sure) before adding fish.

  31. S

    phosphate

as i am currenty experiencing, damn phosphates  i had 3 plants in my tank and they couldn't control it, so i've just added 3 more. Is it normal for me to have phosphates in my tap water?
  32. S

    phosphate

I know that high phosphates contribute to algae growth, but do plants naturally use phosphates aswell?

nope, nothing at the moment, just plants.
  36. S

    changing ph

my ph has risen from 7.6 to 8.8+ (7.6 is tap water ph) what could cause this? i have no fish at the moment, and have recently done a large water change. oh, and i have a few live plants.

ah ha, that explains it.

    Difference in sand?

smithrc, i think you calculations are a bit wrong. if the 1000 is 30 (us) gallons that makes it about 25 (uk) gallons, and i have the deep version of it (only 5cm deeper) which is 40 (uk) gallons.

    Difference in sand?
