Removing juwel filters??

The main reason for removing the Juwel internals is because they are infamous for causing high nitrates due to their poor design. A lot of crap gets trapped inside the filter housing and is difficult to clean out because the filter cannot be romoved, the only way to do it is to stick the end of a hose into the filter cavities and syphon the crap out. Anyone who has a Juwel tank and has not done this yet i recomend trying it the next time you do a water change, prepare to be disgusted.
OMG, can it really cause nitrate probs? Cause I have serious nitrates in all my tanks. I'm definitely gonna have to try that then. Cheers CFC.

I heard that Rekords had problems with the intenral filters. I read it in PFK magazine.

I would have thought that residue silicon on the tank sides shouldnt be a real problem if you can hide it with plants or decor.

I've removed the filters off my Rekord 120 and rio 240. Both came out in minutes.

I'm with CFC - make sure that you have a decent knife and watch out, I snapped a couple of blades.

The silicon spots can be removed easily with a paint scraper designed for windows. (couple of quid from B&Q)

Like most, I'm forced to buy Jewels to pass the spouse test !

I'm well happy with my Juwel 120's. The filters seem very good and look tidy, what are you lot upgrading them to? just curious.

if you haven't ordered yet, may i recommend you take a look at the Fluval Duo Deep 1200, and use the juwel stand with it. This may be easier as they dont have anything fixed into them in the first place, and can be much easier to upgrade (if needed)

Just a thought.

Only thing is my shop doesn't deal with hagen takins there range right out the window!!

I'll be replacing the internal with a external eheim pro 2 thermo most likely.

I hadn't heard of the nitrates problem but I can imagine how it does build up.

I think juwel stuck it to the tank mainly so it does make it harder to change making you still have to buy all there spare filter spads constantly.

Thanks LadyMinion!! don't you worry about lil ole me getting it wrong!! I'm going to look into the ehiem route a bit more though as they come supplied with externals which will be easier to sell on or put on the shelfs as stock or stick on another tank depending on the model.
