Hi there. You can transfer the fish to your ten gal ok - as long as the angels are not too big - I would add a few of their plants to break up the space a bit to give shy ones a place to get away. I would cover the tank with a towel to make it kinda dark and non stressful. Add an airstone and or their filter while you work on the sand in the 39 gal. If you rince the sand super good beforehand you may have very little to settle before they can get put back. Do it gently and add water carefully. Save some of your old substrate and place it in an pantyhose to keep in your tank for awhile or just make sure that you don't clean the filter at the same time and watch the 39 for signs of a mini cycle.
The black onyx sand looks very sharp(nice)!

I have coral sand in my tank, Ive never had really fine sand seems too messy to me. However I like the sound of black onyx sand. :)

Has anyone had two types of sand in their tank, or dosen't that work very well?

I agree with the advice given by jams.alaskan, but also I recommend filling the ten with water from the main tank, and putting the heater in so they dont get cold.
