Rising Nitrates All Of A Sudden

Sounds to me like it could me a combination of all the above. An internal filter with wool is not recommended for a marine tank as they are known to be nitrate factories ie. get clogged up and cause nitrates. IMO get rid of it and instead use a external filter filled with LR rubble. If you wish...

Stocking Options For A 44 Us Gallon Reef

As the title suggests I am looking to stock my 44 US Gallon reef tank. The dimensions are 32" x 18" x 18". As the tank has got corals and a few cleaner shrimp in it I want fish that are completely reef and invert safe. The tank contains approx 22kg LR but I am looking to get some more cured to...

    Algae Problems

Well if phosphates are the only cause for the algae bloom then yes getting rid of them would help solve the problem. Two common methods used to reduce are: 1. Several small partial water changes over the period of a week or 2 can be done until phosphate readings reach 0, or 2. by using phosphate...

    Protein Skimmer Question

This has always been a big debate amongst reefers the world over... wether to use a protein skimmer or not. Good arguments have been stated by both those that agree on using one and those that disagree. One of the main drawbacks of having a protein skimmer is that skimming not only removes...

    Diatom Algae

Well you main objective should be to try and get rid of the nurients that are feeding the algae. Do you use RO water? If not the you should consider using it. Rowaphos should help. Also have you ever considered having a refugium or sump? If so you could always grow some macroalgae in there that...

    Mysterious Clownfish Disapearances

Yea my cleaaner shrimp is also very friendly and jumps out from where ever he is hiding and comes straight to me and I can feed it by hand! However it does spend most of its time perched on either a powerhead or one of the heaters so maybe what ever it is attacking my fish cant get to it?

    Diatom Algae

Diatoms have been known to appear in tanks that have been set up years and are fully mature. There must have been a change in some of you water params to have caused it, or an increase in nutrients present in the water eg. nitrates or phosphates? If so then try to decrease these first. What CUC...

    Mysterious Clownfish Disapearances

I think thats a good point lynden, I forgot that my cleaner shrimp might try to get at the food and end up getting caught in the trap! Mysterious Clownfish Disapearances

As far as I'm aware the serpant star is totally reef safe, it is leathery looking and a greyish white colour with black bands down it's arms. Hitchhiker! Brittle Star Friend Of The Reef Tank?

You can use similar methods to get rid of manjano as you do with aiptasia such as Joe's Juice. Its a shame they can turn into such pests really as they really are attractive and colourful!!

Brittle stars are fine, a lot of people end up paying money for them so count yourself as lucky for having got it free! ;) Brittle stars are not known for eating anemones, but anemones are known to quickly pull away into small cracks/holes in rocks and out of sight so that is probably what...

    How Much Flow ?

IMO a couple of smaller pumps are better than one large one, this way you can position them at different sides/corners of the tank and they can result in a wave making affect which is a bit more natural rather than a strong current coming from one direction! ;)
