Improving inherited nightmare tank - Ongoing

I think it's fair to say the mainstream hobby has almost switched extremes from a severe lack of maintenance (although many people now have set up no or minimal water change tank relying on heavy plant load and a DSB or anaerobic filter which are implemented from the marine side of fishkeeping...

Improving inherited nightmare tank - Ongoing

Amazing job you've done on that tank . Looks pretty good atm despite the difficulties as you mentioned. The nitrates are in a good range too. With that reasonably big stocking though how many stealth water changes do you have to do to keep up with the nitrates?

    When To Turn On Sterilizer

Some people do claim it serves purpose through removing bacteria from the water column which may negatively affect the fish. More of as a preventative from bacterial infections and green water etc.. but will not fix the underlying problem provoking such issues. It won't affect your nitrifying...

    60l (60x30x32) (~15g) Stocking Ideas

I agree CPD, green neon tetra (if that is what you mean by GNT) and rummynose do not fit my water parameters and require large groups yet but I don't believe the latter two are mentioned in this thread. You may be possibly mixed up with asian rummynose (sawbwa resplendens) which I think are...

    Peacocks or Mbuna

Awesome setup! I don't have any experience with African cichlids but I've done a lot of reading on them. With that size tank, and filtration setup either would be great but as you probably already know they need very different scapes. Atm with all that open swimming space peacocks and larger...

    Parasite questions

Chain stores are so riddled with disease only the hardiest stock (definitely not livebearers) cope in these situations. If its the only store in your area, your only other choice is through fish clubs etc... which is annoying when you want to get something a little rarer or that isn't commonly...

    Parasite questions

I'm pretty sure its a general consensus that fenbendazole is the most effective med for internal parasites. You should soak the food, it will be far more effective and cheaper.

    Black or natural sand?

Thank you for clarifying, I think we can just call this a mistake in your wording.

    Black or natural sand?

Iron sand (aka black sand) is mainly composed of magnetite is a dark black sand occurring on many beaches around the world (I don't know if it occurs in any freshwater systems but there may be overlap)(is very similar if not @seangee 's sand). I agree with your statement here, yet a couple of...

    Black or natural sand?

I thought it was a matter of feeling safer over a black substrate that the fish have more pronounced colours and over a bright substrate they feel unsafe and therefore stressed. My only problem with what your saying is a black substrate isn't naturally occurring. Iron sand appears in multiple...

    Black or natural sand?

If I understand correctly, you are saying that sand abrasiveness is the most important factor in sand quality, do you also mean the presence of organic matter can be detrimental? Most sands are mined onshore, offshore or river source. Most if not all play sands/joint sands in NZ are river mined...

    Black or natural sand?

I don't know where OP's from but here at least it's all mined from the same place and isn't any more refined in the sense of grain size or abrasiveness except for the removing of fine dust-like particles.

    Sick acara?

with the EBA it does look like Hexamita. There are many treatments out there but water quality is a big factor in this one, EBA aren't so renowned for strong genetics either. Medication wise, I'd be only guessing.

    Black or natural sand?

Joint sand is usually the same as the play sand depending on the brand. It isn't washed or heat sterilised but it is a bit cheaper.

Freshwater fish for a 50 liters tank

I just saw the dimensions and yeah being taller than long is not ideal at all. I'll adjust my list: you have a point with betta but remember there are other species which would work in that tank, a group of Hara jerdoni, ember tetras or even better Chili Rasbora (not the best options), there are...

Freshwater fish for a 50 liters tank

Wheres the imagination here. @beedobu you have plenty of choices. Pygmy sparkling gourami or just sparkling gourami (may be a little too big) a single one would do well (floo the flowerhorn), if your feeling confident chocolate gouramis of various species and liqourice gouramis (may need...

    My new tank setup

Well so far I can't find anything to say Prime will harm the fish but there is evidence it does not have any effect on nitrogen ions. So because of this, it is reasonably overpriced but still cheaper than many lower concentration dechlorinators. I've read that it uses sodium dithionate compared...

Freshwater fish for a 50 liters tank

What are the dimensions of the tank you're looking at because if its a relatively long tank it may be suitable for neons.

    My new tank setup

According to a representative of Seachem 'As far as direct toxicity, overdosing Prime isn't any concern. It won't poison your fish. It is a reducing agent, so what can cause an issue when over-dosed is that if there aren't enough other things in the water to react with, like nitrogenous waste...

    My new tank setup

Thanks for the reply. I've never seen API's tap water condition being sold only stress zyme which is why I use Prime as its the cheapest for concentration. Fish in cycle?

I like to keep my nitrates around 10-20ppm through small weekly water changes and the water gets a little yellow in that time. It's not really a terrible thing. But that's only on one of my tanks.

    My new tank setup

The new AR aquaone tanks come with pretty (reasonably low intensity) solid lights. The ecostyle models s cannot say the same for. For the plant's issue, I find many take time to acclimate to a new low-tech setup, especially in harder water.

    Best sized Siphon

Isn't the flow or 'suction power' of a siphon for the most part determined by the size adapter/pipe. So you could get a small siphon with a large adapter and hose.

    Possible prolapse

Not OP's fish, so sadly can't really provide a larger tank or just give it away, especially not in that condition. My guess would be dropsy but it would be hard to cure in such a small tank as it's already very stressed. But if you managed to move it into a bigger tank, antibiotics and epsom...

The 46 is a lot rougher, doesn't look like it's in as good condition. Could be a better buy but it would be riskier. The safe bet would be the 55.
