    MYTHBUSTERS

"It's harder to keep a big tank" This myth dogged me for years. Now that I have a bigger tank I find it to be less of a problem than my smaller tanks in the past. Sure it's more of an upfront cost and a little more for filter inserts and stuff but I could never go back. To me it's an...

    What goes well with angels?

Barbels will dissapear with a mild case of fin rot. Up your gravel vac schedule. As far as tetras being nippers, no problems here. Pristellas school across the tank very nicely.

    Angel Behavier

Do a search on "Sexing angels" . If they are large ones they could be getting ready to spawn, or two males fighting for dominance. Is it happening alot?

    filter question

Get a HOB filter. This way you can load it with filter floss, carbon bags, sponges, bio balls etc. HOB are great because the filtering can be custom taylored to your needs. Like right now my water has some ditrius (crap and crud) suspended in it, so I put an extra floss pad in there and it...

    Stocking Angels

I only have 2 angels in my 110. I had 4 but the sunsets harrassed the marbles to no end. The only thing I can say is start with 6 quarter sized ones and let them grow out. The unfortunate thing is you will have to get rid of/seperate some of them in the future. Paired angels are great...

    Assortment of random newbie questions

Stress coat is good when adding fish. Melafix is good for fin rot and damage from attack. Tetras will eat anything, no sweat on the bloodworms.(Defrost them like Kiarra said) Lights will raise temps in some cases. Leave the lid up if you have no confirmed jumpers. Some fish jump, or are prone...

The joy of a good LFS

Ok, I needed some surface action in my tank so I wanted to get Hatchetfish. My local pet store doesn't have them so I drove to A Lot of Fish in Babylon NY. http://www.brooklynaquariumsociety.org/Spo...%20Aquarium.htm What a beautiful place, nice healthy fish, clean tanks and a selection that...

    Cooling systems

I remember way back in college we used to take an old refrigerator and drill holes in the door to run tap lines out. I would imagine if you put a copper coil inside the fridge and set up a pump or powerhead to circulate the water it would work. Small countertop fridge under the tank...

"Different food for each tank mate" Do you?

I feed different foods for my fish. I find it allows everyone to have something, and to not overfeed some fish. My angels wont eat frozen brine, or formula 2 (Green flakes). They eat everything else. My balas don't eat formula 2 either, but the Tetras, corys and plecos eat it. I feed Hikari...

Why can't anyone type the word Pleco?

It's actually forum etiquite(SP?) on Planetcatfish. It helps reduce the search size when the topic is not pleco related. Like if we at TFF said B@TTA instead of betta this thread would not come up in a search since it's not b@tta related. It has nothing to do with names, I name all my fish...

    Discus & Angels

I've seen discus and angels together before in show tanks and it's nice. Have you considered balas instead of angels?(Sorry, I'm a bala guy) Anyhow, I would try some experiments with different foods once the tank is going. Angels are faster than discus and more aggressive during...

My cray ate her shell and she is healthy with no added calcium. I vary feedings from live fish, shrimp pellets and crab/lobster bites, frozen peas, and raw potato slices. The lobster bites have all the nutrients they need.

Who does the chasing in your tank?

Pleco normally rules the roost, but when the angels had fry they chased everyone away from "their" corner. Both the male and female were super protective. Now that the fry are gone, order has returned and everyone is getting along. Occasionally one of the balas bumrush the school of Pristellas...

    New fish

Most catfish have hard cartlage spikes on their doral and side fins. Plecos, corys etc. When frightened they tense their fins and spikes out which get caught in your net. Best way to get them out is to hang the net in the water and let them swim out. You cutting it causes more stress than them...

    you know where i work.

I went to my local walmart yesterday. Luckily they stock no live fish at all. The pet department did have some great deals on plastic plants, so I bought some. $4 for an 18" plant is a good deal no matter where it is. My local store is 2916

    help

I would recommend an additonal filter with some Zeolite (Bacterial) inserts immediatly. 26 fish in a 50 gallon is too many unless they are all tetras. You are overstocked, there is nothing you can do except change water ALOT and add filters till you are at triple the tank rating. Or return...

It might be getting ready t molt, don't worry about feeding since they can go months without food if need be. You can try a small piece of raw potato, they love it. But I would say leave it alone for a few more days and see what happens. For tons of info BlueCrayFish.com forums. Is the...

Sup man? Welcome to the show. Post some pictures of your tanks, and your local fish markets for us in the Member's photo areas. Also, when you say cheap can you give some examples? In NY neon tetras are 3 for a dollar. Small Angels are $3usd. Large ones are $15usd. How does this compare to...

Question about filters and how they are rated

It's too small a filter. However if you go with live plants and a light fish load it might work. Better to go to a plumbing shop and ask for scrap pieces of PVC pipe.(Usually free) and then get some foam. Check out the DIY foam filter/bubblers...

    New 1 gallon with UGF

I saw one at Walmart for 9 bucks three days ago. Just the tank, no extras but yeah, 10 bucks for a 10 gallon. The local Petland Discount by me has a "Starter Kit" 10 gallon for $13 that comes with filter, light and hood and maybe a heater. Sure it's all cheapo stuff but it's a setup.

Don't underestimate plain rock salt as an effective medicine. Also copper coins have been used to treat disease. This sounds like a good topic for a new thread, do you mind if I make a "Homebrewed Medicines thread"?
