A bit chilly last night but the sunset was a banger!!

How long have you been part the hobby and what is the scale of your involvement in it?

I kept fish when I was younger, from 8-18, then stopped into adulthood as my priorities changed and my life ran it's course, through the good and the bad. I started keeping fish again in 2006, mostly ''monster'' and predatory types, and I have been ''pedal to the metal'' ever since, although...

Radical (but effective) cure for black algae

Great technique, but those of us with planted tanks who are battling BBA can't really afford to cut the lights for a month without putting our plants at risk....

    LFS websites -- what websites?!

Think about it... An LFS has a very fluid stock list that it would need to update on a daily basis. You can't possibly expect them to go on to the website and change their stock counts daily. On top of that they probably use a ''webmaster'' to do all of the changes to their websites (don't get...

    Runners/Cyclists/Swimmers

That is awesome!! I would love to run London, I have heard that it is a very fun course. Best of luck to you! The desert in the winter is surprisingly cool. It was cloudy and windy in the day with a high of just 65F (18.3C) and cold at night to 35F (1.7C). We really got lucky. I have done 100...

    Runners/Cyclists/Swimmers

I am an avid runner of distances from 1/2 marathon to 100 miles. I can run a pretty fast 5k and 10k (for my age) but I don't have fun doing them so I rarely do. This is pic is from January, at the finish of the Coldwater Rumble 100 mile endurance run in the Arizona desert (actually was 103.7...

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

We will be in Siena for 4 days during the Palio festival and horse race. We have had to put it off for 2 years due to covid, but we will be there this year no matter what.

Around 11,000' of gain round trip.

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

I go there with a couple friends every October and do what is called Rim to rim to rim. WE run from the south rim down to the river, then up to the north rim, at which point we top off our water, eat a sandwich, then run back the way we came. It's a 43-44 mile round trip and we usually run it in...

What’s the coolest place you’ve travelled to?

The region of Arenal/La Fortuna, Costa Rica is one of my favorite places in the world and we go back every other year. We always stay for a week and when I leave I always feel like there was so much that I didn't get to do. Florence (Firenze) Italy and the surrounding areas of Tuscany are...

    Favorite CLEAN songs

If you started a thread looking for ''clean'' music, I have a feeling that a band with an openly gay, flamboyant, cross dressing lead singer with a history of serious substance abuse is really going to rattle your cage. Just sayin'.....

Nope. No ''clean'' music in my playlist. Pretty much all of it would be considered NSFW.

    Weird white film on driftwood

I guess that I always use the right type of wood then, because I have never had any issues with it. That being said I use manzanita and MDW exclusively.

    Weird white film on driftwood

It's called biofilm. It is completely harmless to fish and totally normal for newly introduced driftwood. Shrimp and certain plecos love it.

    Biggest fail of 2022.

I was removing the rim from a 20 gal long and I cracked the glass. Thankfully it was a free, secondhand tank.

What fish is on your Wish list?

I don't ''wish'' to really keep any certain type of fish right now, but I am looking for a few Laetacara (don't care what type) and a bag of 50-100 black neons (preferably at $1 a piece) and maybe a few Brochis cats. That's about it. I'm pretty easy to please.

Fluval FX6 Whining and Output Hose Shuddering

I would recommend taking it apart, removing the impellor and then putting it back in, then check the intake and out flow tubes for any obstruction. Then put it all back together and see if you still are having the same issue.

Hi from a new-ish planted tank hobbyist in Georgia, USA!

I love the names!! LOTR for the win. You are going to want to get that Java fern out of the substrate and attached to some wood or a rock. They will die if planted like that. (at least I think that's a java fern I saw in there)

    Musicians?

I used to be a bass player (self taught). I played in a punk band for a very brief period of time years ago and didn't persue it much after (lifestyle change). I still pick up my acoustic bass from time to time and I can jam with people if need be.

    Potting soil under sand?

Sand isn't the greatest substrate if you are going goal is carpeting plants. I personally use an inert substrate with root tabs and my monte carlo ground cover is almost out of control.

    New Years Resolutions

I don’t usually do the whole resolution thing. But, I will use the new year to cut back significantly on my consumption of processed sugar. I am an athlete and although I am very good and consistent at what I do, my diet doesn’t always work in my favor..

    Fluval Flustration!

Perfect!! I have the same stuff and it really helps in keeping things “neater”. I admit though, that I still need to use regular scissors to do most of the trimming in my high tech tank.. My plants grow like weeds with C02.

How many tanks do you have?

Thank you!! This hobby is all about patience and going with the flow. I look forward to seeing your progress with your new tank.

    Fluval Flustration!

Maybe a little bit but nothing long term. Also, invest in some basic planted tank tools. A set of long tongs makes planting much neater and less invasive, so less likely to kick up particulate or mulm.
