What kind of casing is this?

We found a really cool egg casing on the beach today. Anyone know what kind of animal it's from?

Looks like a Christmas worm.

doesnt look like any case. Shark cases are normally dark.
In the second picture, you can see the pocket has eggs In it, about half had some, the others were empty :)
 
That makes a little more sense! The shark egg cases I find are spiraled, and dark brown. The egg case you think of as the Knobbed Whelks does resemble it. However, what is the thing in the middle?

It seemed to be other casings, almost like another animals casing was attached( it had pockets similar to the main one). The other ones we found didn't have that on it, but otherwise looked identical.
