I have a fish that his/her stomach is bloated

For ages it's been the standard aquarian tropical fish flake (which is why i thought constipation). The plec gets his algae wafer although many of the other fish have a nibble too and he also gets a bit of cucumber now and again (other fish nibble here too). Since I've been reading on this...

I have a fish that his/her stomach is bloated

Not sure if this should be a different post, but it seems relevant. :D I have a zebra danio that's got a very bloated stomach, it only seems to have extended on one side though. I've been keeping an eye on it and he (/she ??) seems happy enough, swimming about normally. My water stats are all...

    My first TFT

Hiya, If you are struggling to find test kits you could always try ebay ... e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/API-MASTER-TEST-KIT-...1QQcmdZViewItem Although I'm pretty sure "The Goldfish Bowl" should stock them (Magdalen Road, Just off Cowley Road, Oxford). :)

    My first TFT

As a suggetion, I'd start off feeding once a day. Let them be eating for maybe 2 minutes, if theres any flake left floating after that, try and scoop it out, so it doesnt linger :)

    My first TFT

You'll need test for Ammonia, NitrItes and NitrAtes. I use ones by API and they seem to be pretty good. :) It's generally considered better to get the ones where you put chemicals into a test tube to get colour changes, rather than the dip strips.

    Clown Loach Problem

I now have images of an eel in its natural habitat, going into it's kitchen, opening up the freezer and browsing thru, thinking "What shall I have for my dinner???" :D

    Plants

I only have a few plants in my tank, but they seem to be going ok so far :) I struggled initially, but then got some hardier plants - java fern (looks cool growing over bogwood) and also some anubias ... I'd post in the planted section of this forum for a bit more advise if i were you tho :)...

    algae...again

I've got a bit of an algae problem in one of my tanks. Its only at one end though ... the one that points towards the window. I've just covered that one end with the black background stuff. Hope that helps :)

    Which Tank?

I wouldnt see a problem with going for the one filter / heater set up, so long as they are both up to the job. That will depend on a variety of factors, mainly the exact size of your tank and what you intend to stock. If you put your dimensions into an aquarium calculator like tank master : -...

    Which Tank?

Definately go for the biggest tank you can ... as posted above, you will only regret it if you dont :) Whichever one of those you get, you'll be amazed how easy it is to overstock.

    Building Tank hoods and cabinets

My 30g tank is on a wooden stand. My dad "made" it or rather he adapted it from some previous incarnation. Anyway, it is majorly solid, it's lasted about 20 years so far and I reckon will easily last another 20. :D

    Nitrate Levels

I think the way forward is to keep on with the water changes. Tho the best youll get is i guess down to your tap water readings. And trying some live plants should help too.

    Nitrate Levels

Also, Just a thought, but what are the levels like out of your tap? When you say very high, what are you actually getting? As i understand it, moderate levels are "allowable" (for want of a better word) like say less than 40ppm

    Update on my situation...

Yeah, I thought about that just after i closed down last night, I should have rephrased it, sugesting that someone else might have a quarantine tank that she could use, that already had cycled water in it with decent readings, then at least the fish are only battling the ich and not the ammonia...

    Update on my situation...

Just a thought ... Where do you live? I wonder if there might be a local club (or something similar) of fish keepers that might be able to help you out. Maybe you could find someone that way to help you house your fish til the water has cycled or maybe they could let you have something from...

    My Tank

Also maybe try http://www.freecycle.org - sign up in your area for info on the stuff other people dont want (sounds a bit like the wombles heh guys? :D ) There's often people giving away fishtanks for free :hey: in our local area (as well as all sorts of other stuff) Cheers JDS

    Nitrate Test Kits

I agree, tho my first ever API nitrate test was dead easy to read ... it was very very red ... several daily water changes later and it was nicely back into the "orangey/red but more orange than red" safer looking readings :flex: Cheers JDS

    Flicking

I once saw similar behaviour on one of my fish... On closer inspection i found that there was what looked like a blister on the side of the fish... Closer still, and i realised it was a fish louse. I had to physically remove it with a pair of tweezers. :/ I think i found this...

    Major LFS gripe

Mmm so this will be my nearest fish store then (2 miles from door to door) ?? I've not been there yet, I normally go to "The Goldfish Bowl" on Magdalen Road. (Or the garden centre near my grans at South Hinksey, but i dont think they're so knowledgeable) I'll have to call in and let you know if...

    Just a few questions please

Im guessing the urine smell is the ammonia ?? (Unless you actually have a naughty cat :) ) It's still early days in your cycling process and theres loads of info on this site about it, but generally the cycling will turn the ammonia into nitrites and then nitrates over the next few weeks...

    Water Change

I do the same. :) Also, I read that some people leave the water in the bucket overnight before adding it to the tank. Is there any merit to this? Cheers JDS

    Golden Loach / CAE questions

Nice tail, ncj :) I think I'll be keeping mine on his own til he outgrows the tank, then I think i'll have to have a word with my lfs and hope they'll look after him for me :) Oh ... and I nearly wet myself at your signature, the one about the fish in the tank

    Golden Loach / CAE questions

Many thanks for all the info... I think i'll just tweak the temp a bit and give him another plant or two to hide in and I suppose just wait til he outgrows the tank :( At the moment he still seems pretty content to suck on the algae, Ill keep an eye on him to see if he goes off it as he gets...

    Golden Loach / CAE questions

Thanks for the prompt reply :) As I do with pretty much all of my fish, I've got rather attached to "Alan" and don't really want to take him back :( I guess he'll be ok on his own ?? If anyone could let me know what temp he'd be happiest at I'd be grateful Since he's got a tank to himself I...

    Golden Loach / CAE questions

Quite a while ago i decided to buy a fish that might clean up some of the algae in my tank. I went to a garden centre and was advised an "Albino Loach" might be the way forward. I took this advice and bought the little fella. Anyway, having thought about it and done some research, what i bought...

    virgin fishkeeper

Hi, just a quickie to say that I had quite a lot of trouble early on with growing real plants. I asked at my local fish shop for some hardier plants and they suggested Java Fern and Anubias. I've since had a lot of success with both of these plants growing well (and not being overly eaten by...
