I have a long finned black tetra and all the other tetras stomach looked bloated alos so I fasted them for two days and I've cut back on how much I fed them. But my biggest long finned black tetras stomach is still bloated even though the others stomach has went back to normal size. Is it pregant or is it still constipated?

What do you normally feed the fish, try some shelled peas, what does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet, can the fish maintain it's balance in the water, and are scales sticking out like a pinecone.

I always fed all my tropical fish (except my bettas) flakes. I haven't seen any of them go to the bathroom only the pleco I've seen do it. And no no scales sticking out like a pinecone. And yes he can maintain his balance. And its ok to feed fish human food?

The problem with to many dried foods in there diet is it leads to constipation and swim bladder problems, you need more frozen foods and veg in there diet iike, bloodworms, brimestrimp, daphnia etc,veg shelled peas, broc, cabbage, cucumba etc.

But I've heard that some blood worms can cause a sickness in a fish if something isn't done right. And he do I serve a pea to a fish without it choking? And is it ok to feed fish human food? And where do you get brineshrimp and bloodworms?

The lfs for frozen foods,i've never had any problems with frozen bloodworms, human foods, peas, broc, cumcumba, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, just boil the veg for a few minutes let cool down, cut into small peices with some veg, with peas just pop out of shell and mush between fingers.

So that means I have to put nasty fish food in my freezer? So you don't think he can get un constipated if I fast them a couple days? Or do you think since this one fish is the only one whos stomach hasn't went down isn't pregant?

It could be pregnant but it's hard for me to tell, but if all the other fish have been bloated it's saying constipation, the one with the still bloated tummy could have an advanced bacterial infecttion.

You can buy jellied bloodworm or daphnia in little sachets; they don't need refrigeration and don't make a mess; try your lfs.

Anyway, peas are not nasty- surely you can fit those into your freezer. Mine go wild over it; it' the nearest to a feeding frenzy you will see outside Blue Planet!

Of course it is perfectly possible that your tetra has some other problem (parasites, bacterial infection); but it is worth taking the trouble to feed a varied diet anyway; they will love you for it.

"is it ok to feed fish human food:"

Well, lots of animals do eat greens and vegetables. Perhaps God really created plants with guppies in mind, and we are just taking advantage, eating fish food. Just a thought.

Is the tetra slightly bigger than the others. Do you see any of them chasing each other? Sounds like its carrying eggs to me.

Not sure if this should be a different post, but it seems relevant. :D

I have a zebra danio that's got a very bloated stomach, it only seems to have extended on one side though.
I've been keeping an eye on it and he (/she ??) seems happy enough, swimming about normally.
My water stats are all ok, I'm due a water change tomorrow too.
I'm wondering if it's constipation or something else...

I've just tried some peas on a cocktail stick, the platys went barmy for it, but the danio, while swimming around and around the pea, didn't actually take any. Eventually i just squished a pea inside the tank so it ended up in really tiny bits floating around and the danio managed to grab some.
I shall not feed them at all tomorrow and see what happens.
Is this the right thing to do, or should i try something else? :dunno:
Cheers

What do you normally feed the fish, can the fish maintain it's balance in the water, you say it bloated on one side, t dosn't look like a lump does it on the one side.

For ages it's been the standard aquarian tropical fish flake (which is why i thought constipation).
The plec gets his algae wafer although many of the other fish have a nibble too and he also gets a bit of cucumber now and again (other fish nibble here too).
Since I've been reading on this forum, ive also tried some brine shrimp for variety (but only a couple of times in the last fortnight) He was bloated before then.
He swims perfectly normally, doesnt struggle to stay upright or at any given depth.
I wouldnt say it looks like a lump, more like a blister maybe ?? Although that doesnt really describe it either.
I've tried to photograph it, but he swims away too quickly, so is just a blur... I'll try again tomorrow to see if i can get him to stand still !!
