the tank has been running for about 7 - 8 months im not quite sure how they died, i know one was a becuase my sister put to much food into it, and anothing i think was a nitrite spike not sure how it happened i have tryed to keep them anout 6 times usually only have none survive after a few weeks

i dont think that a african butterfly fish would do well in a 10 gallon, they are active fish and need atleast 20gallons minimum for 1 i have 2 in one of my tanks

do you have the breeding pair? a 70 gallon should be good enough for the 2 of them alone

a 55 gallon should be fine for 1 maybe 2 blood parrots

i would go with a SA theme tank (SA being south American) i have seen some nice tanks, they are not as colourful as African cichlids but most of them get bigger and probably not as expensive. i love severums and earth eaters like jurapari.

most cichlids will need a 4 foot tank, some mbuna will be ok in a 3 foot tank just watch out for the melanochromis species they are vicious

the top shot looks like a male melanochromis auratus thats just turning black, i have 3, 1m 2 f and my male has just started to transform into his black colouration the bottom one looks like a female melanochromis chipokae like adambrum said

in a 55 gallon i wouldn't go over 15 fish with the stock 12 fish preferably, i would stay in the 4-5 inch range also for a 55 gallon although it would be ok to put a few fish over 5 inches but nothing over 6 inches
