i want to do a 5 gallon invert tank with 1 or 2 shrimp, 2 or 3 hermits, some snails.

would this work, if so what equiptment should i use lighting is not a big deal in a tank with just live rock and inverts right?

how many gallons per hour should i be using?

and what if i was going to build a sump into the tank? would that work?

the argonite sand should be about 1 1/2 - 2 inches deep right?

i will have more questions later and possable a little picture that i will draw on what the built in sump will look like

thanks MEePStER

Are you talking about skunk cleaner shrimp? Two cleaners, IMHO, is pushing it, those things have long feelers, lol. Lighting is no big deal if you don't want corals

for reefs, about 20x the tank's volume, but seeing as it's not going to be a reef, you can go a lot less.

Into? You mean like a false wall? Or do you mean just having a sump under the tank like most people do. I don't really see a problem with it.

If you want it to. :p It can be more or less, but unless you go really deep (5+ inches) most people go less.

Okay, I hope this helps. :)

do you think it will work? i would leave 3/4 of a inch on the middle peice of the T shape of the sump

Yep, it can work. IME the hermits are the tricky part because they will do fine for a while (usually about a month) and then get territorial/aggressive and start causing problems. Be careful on hermit choice - go with something non-aggressive and keep a good supply of empty shells in the tank so they wont' be inclined to fight or go after the snails. Also don't mix species if you can avoid it. For snails, you'll also want small ones like Ceriths/Nassarius or Trochus unless you plan on target-feeding. Avoid As far as the shrimp, I wouldn't put anything but really small shrimp species in a 5g. Most cleaner-type shrimp have whiskers that are just too big.

If you won't be going into corals, sure. I'm only got a cheap strip fluorescent on my 5g (I think the bulb is around 40W). The main part is the powerhead and avoiding heat buildup with equipement. So, you really can't get all that fancy with powerful lighting.

Also, keep in mind that with the diagram you have, if that's the whole 5g being divided into a refugium sort of thing, you'll leave yourself even less room for animals that need space to run around. Just keep the scale in mind when looking at inverts...some of them need a fairly large stomping ground to get along well with the others.
