Geo-geopartae? (sp) Chews Gravel And Spits It Out?

Just bought a fish today that was sold to me as a "Geo-Geopartae". I have no idea how to spell that, but it's a fish who tumbles gravel around in its mouth and eats the particles then spits out the gravel. Any info on this fish?

Geophagus? This is a "earth eater" that sifts through the substrate for it's food, although they so prefer to be on sand which is easier to sift for them.

Geophagus is a large group of south america cichlids.

There are several species, all are generally large fish, Reaching about 10", there is one or two species however which stay small, but these are not commonly encountered in the aquarium trade, well, are less common than many species. Have you got a picture? we could identify it for you.

Thanks!, I've looked and it is infact a Jurupari Earth Eater, a very peaceful but interesting fish. As far as I have read he will accept chopped beef hearts, earth worms, frozen blood worms and hearty pellets. Anything else I need to know?

They constantly shift around in the substrate and sand is really good for them. They are such pigs when it comes to eating (They eat anything!). Along with the meaty foods, I would suggest putting in zucchini, because mine like to graze off of it. They need a pretty large tank when they get older, as they can become 10inches long. Also, in the wild they are schooling species, so it is best to have more than one.

My dream aquarium (which is will be achieved by the end of this year) is a tank filled with a school of these guys and some other, native tankmates.

Could you tell me where you got it as I have been ooking for 2 or 3 of these for ages.The name now is actually Satanoperca not Geophagus.

If i am not mistaken, Jurapari is a term used to describe several species of the "geophagus species." Got any pics? these fish grow large by the way. Provife a tank at least 4ft long by 2ft wide.

how big is your tank a full grown jurapari will need a big tank about 75 gallons for a full grown fish no less (correct me if im wrong) best kept in groups of 3+ the fish will average 10 inches long.

They CAN be kept singulary and arnt over agressive fish. But i would personally not keep it singulary, And yes, they grow large, If it is indeed satanaperca Jurapari, id keep 3 in maybe a 120g.
