Hi, I just got two new Severum, and one of them has strange marks on its head. Please see the photo below, the 'marks' I am referring too are the ones above and behind its eyes. Are these just sensory organs or is it something else?

Thanks. I'm not sure what happened with the fins, maybe they fought in the shop - there has been a bit of mouth locking since they been home, but that has all stopped now. The smaller of the severum has its side fin eaten about half-way off. It looks like it will grow back though given time...

I'm really surprised that their colours can change so drastically. I once had a bunch of Black Emperor Tetras that would turn salmon pink whenever they were spooked - so yes, maybe it is a similar thing going on here. I ended up getting the two severum, they are lovely fish and seemed so sad...

I'm starting to think I was too quick to judge! He's not quite as 'brightly coloured' as the gold severum's but that is no bad thing is it. This guy is one of a pair, he is about 8" to 9" and the other one is 7" to 8". They both have the exact same colouring.

Thanks for the comments all! I don't know what camera you have, mine is a DSLR. I set the camera to aperture priority mode and opened the aperture as wide as it will go (lowest f number). I then chose ISO 1600 and under-exposed the images by 2 full-stops which gave me a fast shutter speed.

This is what I did. Just make sure you WASH IT LOADS AND LOADS!! Not sure what could have gone wrong with your sand though, so long as you have washed it, then the water shouldn't have dis-coloured - really odd.
