Hi, I just got two new Severum, and one of them has strange marks on its head. Please see the photo below, the 'marks' I am referring too are the ones above and behind its eyes. Are these just sensory organs or is it something else?

Any pitting in the head region.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing, excess mucas, darting.
Is there any white specs behind the lens of the eye.
Could they be injuries.

Looks as if it *potentially* could be hole in the head, can you post water parameters, tank and stocking descriptions please?

Thanks for the replies!

No pitting, no flicking or rubbing.
No excess mucas or darting.
The eyes on one of them are very slightly cloudy, and one is scratched. The fins are also slightly damaged on both fish. I am not sure if these injures are caused by fighting each other - or from other tank-mates in the shop.

The Severum has been in my tank less than 12hrs so it isn't caused by the water or my tanks stocking. I was a bit concerned that it could be hole in the head.

Water parameters are:
Am: 0.0
Ni: 0.0
Na: 30
Ph: 7.2

How long did you climatise the new fish for.

Also post the thread in the cichlid part of the forum.

Cloudy eye is a symtom of a desease not a desease in it's own right.
Causes.
Bad water quality.
Stress.
Old age.
Injury.
Irratation.
Poor diet.
Parasites.
Bacterial.

I climatised the fish for approximately 45mins.

Both the severum were extremely stressed while in the LFS, they both kept to the bottom of the LFS tank and didn't move about much. They were also very, very faded - they have since started colouring up and are swimming happily around my tank and are getting on well with other tank inhabitants.

These severum are approx 9" and in the LFS were kept in an 18" wide by 10" deep tank for over 1 month.

Here is a photo of one of them before it started colouring up:

Bless him.

You will get more help over in the cichlid part of the forum. Never kept them or had to deal with hole in the head.
Hole in the head usually starts as pitting, indentations, or spots.

Thanks for you help Wilder, I've created a thread in the Cichlid forums.

It's very difficult to see if these marks are pitted or not. If they are it is very shallow, here is two more photos:

I know it hard to say if it's hole in the head.
Hope you get your answers in the cichlid part of the forum.
