Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what type of Severum is in the photo? It is meant to be a green severum, however I think the colouring looks somewhat bland. The severum is in a small tank in the shop and has been there about a month. It looks healthy but not too happy, as it hangs around at the bottom of the tank.

So, if this is indeed a Green Severum as claimed - will it colour-up a bit once I get it home and into quality conditions?

Update comparing latest photo to the first photo. It's looking like they are either full or maybe cross turquoise, what do you guys think? Also, any ideas how much more they could colour-up?

Mate that is gorgeous!!! :hyper:  It kind of looks like a red spot notatus  But not sure if that is right or not.

You say that fish, in that photo, is bland? thats absolutley gorgous man, get it if you have room!

I'm starting to think I was too quick to judge! He's not quite as 'brightly coloured' as the gold severum's but that is no bad thing is it.

This guy is one of a pair, he is about 8" to 9" and the other one is 7" to 8". They both have the exact same colouring.

Awww man that is soooooo lucky!!! Get them and sell me a baby in about 18 months when I have my 6fter :)

i dont know anything about severums, but i think it looks really good, though if it colours up a bit it couldnt hurt

That looks like a stressed severum. You won't see its natural colors really shine until its at home in an aquarium were it can calm down. I used to have a pair of these and they would change color quite rapidly when they were stressed. It was kind of amazing!

That Black Line makes be think it is a green severum. Normally the Red spots don't have that line. Severum are amazing colour changing fish. They can go from Cream to Black. My little Baby turned Black when I first got her she was stressed and had ich. She is 100% better and I have never seen her get that pale.

Could be a Green severum that is a bit light coloured and is stressed because they will get pale when stressed or kept in poor conditions.

Like Guppymonkey said no way to know for sure what colour it is ment to be until kept in the proper conditions. If you want a Severum get it. The colour change will be amazing most likely. You will have so post a before and after photo for us. Yes I think it will colour up nicely. But can't say for sure.

It does look a little like notatus, but I havent seen one with red spots like that, plus the banding is only on the back and notatus have more bands, but then again, it could also be a hybrid or green/red spot or similar.

There are a surprising amount of Severums that only come into the hobby from time to time but since these are rehomed adults it would be hard to find out if they are wild or not. If they were we might be able to find out the name there are a lot of "sp." type sevs that are appearing now or alternativly it could be a green x red spot like minxy said or if its possible notatus x red spot.... interesting :) Wills

I'm really surprised that their colours can change so drastically. I once had a bunch of Black Emperor Tetras that would turn salmon pink whenever they were spooked - so yes, maybe it is a similar thing going on here.

I ended up getting the two severum, they are lovely fish and seemed so sad in the shop. Now in my tank they are already starting to look quite a bit happier. Here is a photo I just took, the black bar at the back has started to fade and he has some more colour appearing in him. The other one still has a very dark bar.

So it look like at least some of the colouration is stress related. One question though, any one have any idea how long it can take for their colour to come back?

In good water with good food and no fighting you will see drastic improvements within the week. What happened to his fins? He is still looking fantastic :)

Thanks. I'm not sure what happened with the fins, maybe they fought in the shop - there has been a bit of mouth locking since they been home, but that has all stopped now.

The smaller of the severum has its side fin eaten about half-way off. It looks like it will grow back though given time, I have added Melafix into the water to help some. They hid for a while behind some bogwood, but now they are swimming about quite happily.

They will colour up in a few days and settle down. I wouldnt worry about adding melafix, it wont hurt, but would do some extra water changes, good clean water will heal those fins up quickly :good:
