i don't gravel vac anymore, my tank is filled with hairgrass, if i see debris i simply just use my hands to wave it off whilst changing water.

the root tabs certainly would help the amazon swords as they are heavy root feeders. Since you only have normal gravel i would suggest you add roottabs , this will provide your plants with iron and minerals. Light however is more important than ferts. Try to aim for something between 40 to 50~...

you really don't need a bubble counter , and i wouldn't try mending a bubble counter its just not worth it, bubble counter doesn't cost that much anyway. secondly the bubble counter is not necessary it just a device that shows how much bubble your releasing per minute,

I agree with NRY, thats the best way to go, you really do not need airport lights to lights up your tank. It really is waste of electricity.

No they are not worth it really. expensive there is benefits in one but for the cost you rather spend on ferts and plants , and other things that will make your plants flourish better

java fern is your answer! . these plants do have black spots on them if they are ill deficent in nutrients but they are very hardy and easy to grow. Also these plants don't need to be planted in soil (they shouldn't ! or else they die) tie them on rocks or wood.

i agree with barney, i would suggest you wait , get the soil first, then fill water, just make sure you don't disturb the soil too much. ADA stuff goes cloudy. Trust me, i had :P first hand experience i replaced added ADA soil when the tank was full. IT was cloudy for couple weeks , first week...

looks like you need abit more sand there, it looks a bit shallow, plants lke the swords will need alot of depths for roots to grow, otherwise it stunted and dies off

the after shots, its actually ain't too bad andy. just needs a few trimmings to take away the brown foliage, and it should be growing nicely in no time, I have seen alot worst.

ordinary gravel will be ok , as long as the gravel is no bigger than 'pea' size. You could perhaps try mixing in the gravel with laterite, or the flora root stuff. they bascially clay, rich with iron minerals. But this is not necessary ordinary gravel will work just fine
