Cycling And My Nitrates Are Dropping!

Just a thought - The nitrate could be being denitrified ... an anaerobic bacteria will convert it to N20 - N2 so it degasses. edit - why this should be happening in your tank is a mystery because your tank should be an aerobic environment .. so maybe your substrate ... or your tanks not...

Nuclear Plants Kill Billions Of Fish, Says Scientist

Have they moved Sellafield? Wasn't it on the West coast of England up near (in?) Cumbria ... That's nowhere near the north sea, its the Irish sea ... I'm also not sure that I'm going to listen to a bunch of Whale hunters when it comes to conservation of the oceans life ... mind you they do...

    Diy Lighting

Those 2G11 lights are the same that interpet sell. You should be able to get a new style ballast that doesn't require a starter and doesn't suffer from the flickering of the old style ones ... I was going to buy the bits and diy but I couldn't source a waterproof fitting. I'd also be more...

I was looking around at different ways of filtering and I came across the fluidised bed system. I was wondering if anyone had used one and what their experience of it was like.

    Sad Day

Bad luck, good to hear that some survived though, and as the posters above have said take care to look out for desease caused by stress. I have a couple Jewel ones, a new Rena (the black plastic one) and a visitherm. The one thing that they all have in common is that their thermostats are...

Fishless Cycle - Results So Far

Its a good start ... I have no problems with symmetry ... though I understand why many do. I'm unsure though as to why you would want CO2 if you haven't got the high lighting to go with it?

    Deaths - Oxygen Related?

You would think that if it is a water problem the Neons would have died because they are a bit of a pathetic fish ... they both share similar water temps 20-27C ... temperature may be a problem because at higher temps water carries less oxygen ... I wonder if they were fine before adding to the...

    Mysterious Deaths

I had some fish die mysteriously on me when I first started ... the only thing I could come up with was that I mustn't have washed my hands enough and some chemicals from a shed I was building had got into the tank. I hear that you should always make sure your net dries out in-between uses...

    Cycling So Far

Yes do a water change to get the nitrite down to a readable level. I would add 1ppm ammonia daily from now on ... this will be enough to keep the bacteria colony alive, but you can bring it back up to 4-5ppm if that makes you happy♠.

    Cycling With Fish Food

You really don't need to add 5ppm ... you would have no problems if you added the same amount of food that you would give to the fish on a daily basis. I had seen somewhere on this site that Wal-Mart sell an ammonia product that you can use for cycling ... have a search on the site ... there...

    Can Corrys Hybridize?

Ok, sorry to be pedantic but when you mentioned a priori and assumption in the same sentence it made me wonder if you actually understood what it means ... philosophically speaking. For a fact to be a priori it has to be true by definition. Hence most if not all a priori facts are actually...

Nuclear Plants Kill Billions Of Fish, Says Scientist

As with much reported science I suspect that there is a considerable contextual discrepancy between it and the final published paper. Well if its dumping the water back a few degrees warmer then it must be having some effect, however marginal ... and if I remember rightly from my visits to...

    Tank With Only Plants

Cough cough no you can't do this with those land plants, you're just wasting electricity. No plant will benefit from 24/7 light ... all plants need time to respire its part of their cycle. As the poster above mentioned, the only thing you'll get from 24/7 lighting is algae.

    Which Is Easier To Breed?

Yeah, I have WCMM and Leopard Danios in the same tank, the WCMM have produced plenty of fry, I have a tank full and that's after some Dragonfly larvae ate a couple tanks full. The Danios have done nothing and TBH I find their flowing fins to be more than annoying.

    Can Corrys Hybridize?

So it seems that even by the standards of their own organisation they are defective. This aside, I think albino fish are ugly (thankfully in the wild they at least provide a nice snack for the local piscovore) and when I mentioned getting more corys the first item on my list will be a Panda...

    Pets At Home

They carry way more general stock than my lfs, filters, tests, tanks etc., so I have no problem with buying that kind of stuff from them if the price is right. I also have no problems with buying plants from them especially as they stock tropica and sell for considerably less than some online...

Ideas On Why Cycling Wont Start

Its not a hard water issue ... from reading on the Inet ... I've read quite a few links and the all come back with pretty much the same thing. So it would seem that it may in fact be caused by too little chlorine or chloramines ... or something else that is using up the chlorine and stopping...

    Water Testing Questions

They can cost between £4-7 depending on the test ... pH cheap ... Nitrate expensive. You can also buy what are called Master tests that contain most if not all the tests you'll need and these can be got for as little as £19 (rrp £26) so hunt around. I use a mixture of API and Tetra tests ... I...

Ideas On Why Cycling Wont Start

Personally I am totally against the high dose, test and wait method. I think it presents far too many opportunities for error. IMO daily dosing at low levels along with daily 10% water changes is the way to go, that way the bacteria always have some ammonia and you are only testing to see...

    Fishless Cycle So Far

Makes me wonder if high nitrite levels inhibit bacterial growth ... hate to say this ... probably again ... you are much better off doing a daily low dose, that way neither your ammonia nor your nitrite will go off the charts.

Ideas On Why Cycling Wont Start

A Britta filter is a really bad idea. As you can see they are basically a waste of time ... and potentially harmful because you don't want to change your water hardness ... if I remember correctly this is done by exchanging your calcium/magnessium ions and replacing them with chloride ones.

    New Tank Etc Questions

You'll find that water hardness also plays a crucial role in what plants you can have. Its really worth taking the extra effort to source plants suitable to your lighting and water parameters as if you don't what will happen is they will slowly rot releasing organics into the water and creating...

    Can Corrys Hybridize?

If they can breed together and produce viable fertile offspring then why not? If they produce infertile offspring then no harm done. They only small cause for concern is when cross breeding produces something like pedigree dogs which are genetically weak and prone to all sorts of painful...

    Cycling My 10 Gal.?

It is probably better to add the dechlorinator as chlorine or chloramines in the water will inhibit the growth of the bacteria. So doing so will save you a day or two in the cycle. edit - If you are using an airstone and your water is treated with chlorine, it will degass pretty quickly, most...

    Fishless Cycle So Far

A pH of 9 should cause no problems with the bacteria. Its a low pH that generally causes problems ... as waterdrop can attest to. What kind of cloud, green or milky? If you have nothing in the tank that could cause a rise in the pH then the most likely reason for such a rise from 7-9 is that...

    Beginner Advice

Yeah, even with cycle products you need ammonia, if only to test that the cycle product has actually done its job. You should be able to get ammonia from a chemists, or boots its not expensive. When cycling I believe that a temp around 30C is beneficial, and extra aeration can do no harm after...

    Beginner Advice

Get your water tested at your lfs, then all you really need to buy is the ammonia and nitrite liquid tests. Unless you are wanting to change your water chemistry the other tests are a complete waste of money as you will only ever really need to do the pH and GH KH tests once. I'd also get a...

    Fishless Cycling

Take out all your water (though don't let the tank dry out) - you can hoover the gravel and give the tank a light clean as you do it. Don't forget to keep your filter immersed in tank water while you do it and don't forget to use dechlorinated water when you refill it. Test your water again...
