Why Is My Aquarium So Hot?

Yeah, I bought one that went mad and the one I have now (a Hagen) seems to put my temp as 28C when the heater is set at 22C the LCD ones are no better as they give a spread reading so it could be anywhere from 22-28. I'm going to get glass ones too. Though I do have serious doubts as to the...

If I Change My Filter Will I Have To Start A Cycle All Over Again

Agree with MW, just run them in tandem and then when you remove the UGF you'll have a fully loaded filter. Why you would want to remove a UGF and replace it with an inferior method of filtration is your call I guess.

    Nitrifying Bacteria

Bacteria don't just die when they run out of food. They can go dormant. So refrigeration isn't necessarily needed. The most probable reason why these products don't work, apart from operator error, will be localised water chemistry. The same reasons why I among others manage to cycle in 21...

You can do the same thing to frogs, they don't show signs of distress. However put them straight into a pan of boiling water and they will.

    Do You Eat Fish?

Love it, though its all in the cooking ... was even thinking of getting some catfish so that I could eat them when they out grow the tank ... yummy.

    When Is A Cycle Finished?

I don't think its necessarily important to know the species. Your bacterial culture consists of many more species than just the main AOB & NOB ones, it will be a complete eco-system. I also expect that there will be predator species in there too. The issue is more about keeping a balance...

Best Algae Eater For 5 Gallon?

I had an individual in a 40l tank and he did more than fine, I moved him to a tank with 6 others, they move about but they do not shoal and tbh they don't do much interacting ... too busy eating ... so don't worry about getting just one as it'll do fine.

New Cabinet And Fake Rock Background

The cabinets so over engineered that it looks like it will survive almost anything, not like the flimsy shop bought ones. The rocks look fantastic, here's hoping you solve the alkaline problem.

Can Anyone Identify Him For Me?

The golden loach is just a colour variant of the Chinese Algae Eater. They become aggressive around the 4" mark, though mine was smaller when it started to become a problem ... for some reason it hates Danios with a passion. It will probably end up much worse than the Fox ... I say probably...

    Abyss Stockport

I thought Stockport was an Abyss ... I'd thank my lucky stars that I escaped from there ... If It wasn't for the fact that I'm now living in Luton which sadly is remarkably similar. My mother-in-law lives in Manchester and her lfs are amazing.

    Stupidly High Nitrate

Yes 50mg/l is the legal limit in the UK and your fish wont be bothered by it, nitrate has to be much higher to cause problems to fish, and as doresy said, the water change takes out more than just nitrate.

    Wpg

Are you sure that you have a 55 gallon tank and not a 55 litre? Because the 15w tubes are normally ~2ft which unless you have a deep cube shaped tank they wouldn't even begin to cover a 55g tank. The WPG is in my opinion pretty worthless anyway ... but as it goes it works only when comparing...

    Forest Wood

Apart from anything else, most woods will simply rot and in doing so will release lots of tanins and organics that you don't want in your tank. Woods that are less prone to rotting because their natural environment is riverside etc have a nasty tendency once immersed in water to come back to...

Its important to note though that through the majority of that 4.6 billion years the planet has been uninhabitable to humans. Getting Fed Up And Put Off The Hobby Of Fish Keeping!

I sort of agree with Davo86 ... though your lfs should have acclimatised the fish to the local water conditions, my Guppies and Corys are happy at pH 7.8. I started off with Neons and Glowlights and after about 6 months they had all died. My mother-in-law is constantly buying cardinals and...

    Smashed Lights!help

Well I didn't realise that mercury was used in tubes ... you've got the figure wrong though it's more like Still a heck of a lot considering how many tubes must be used and smashed each year. You'll have a heck of a job of removing all the glass. I'd just throw the whole substrate in the bin.

What On Earth Is This......alien In Tank!

I had quite a lot in my tanks ... they ate well over 100 fry. One even turned into a dragonfly. I though that they had come in on plants, but I'm more inclined to believe that they came in with the live food as I didn't just find them in one tank, I found some in a tank without plants.

    Zebra Danios Cycling 55 Gallon

Well you're going to have to make daily water changes in the region of +20% ... quite a lot of buckets for a 55g tank. Its definitely less hassle to do a fishless cycle on a tank your size. If your tank is heavily planted, I hear that the plants will do much if not all of your filtering for...

    Reflective Plastic Strip "thing"

You must have an older model as my Juwel 60 monlux hood has a strip of aluminium clipped into the hood - I haven't seen a replacement for it on the Juwel website ... I also have a Rio 125 with the optional reflectors and I guess you could probably shoe horn one of them into place ... you'd...

    Reflective Plastic Strip "thing"

The best reflective surfaces seem to be white and not silver. Stupid Lfs....

As long as you remember that the LFS primary agenda is to make money and you treat everything they say in light of that you can never go wrong. It seems, from experience and from the attitudes of some people that most shop workers are on about the same moral level as used car salesmen.

    Drinking Water

'self Maintaining' Sand As A Substrate?

I guess some people use gravel tidies to separate the layers? TBO I've got no idea what I'm going to do as I've got a 1-2" sand fertiliser mix on the bottom and then two different sized and separated gravels on the top. I guess I'll just do my best to separate the larger gravel as that cost...

    Sand For Tank

It shouldn't be too dirty because its already been washed to remove the iron that would stain kids clothes, so you'd just give it a bit of a wash to make yourself feel better. Lets face it the bottom of most fishes streams or ponds wouldn't make ideal play material for the kids.

'self Maintaining' Sand As A Substrate?

You'll find that the sand will over time sink to the bottom and your gravel will be on top. Best to get rid of the gravel. I think that some loaches (e.g.Khuli?) do a fair bit of burrowing.

Is It Possible To Have A Tropical Tank In A Conservatory

It would depend upon how big the tank is ... the bigger the better ... and how hot your conservatory gets in summer, so if you've got a south facing with no shade you're probably out of luck. ... a normal aquarium heater will be adequate for keeping the temp constant during winter. Even if it...

    Algae Eaters

That Goldringed Sucker is a hillstream Loach. Go to Loaches Online to read about what they require. From what I gather for them to have a decent crack at life they will need a lot of water movement, more than most other fish will tolerate and it will be a lack of algae that will be a problem...

    Brine Shrimp (sea Monkeys)

I've just bought a brine shrimp hatcher ... it fits inside the tank, which is a little hazardous and takes 48hrs to make more than enough to feed my fry. I was also thinking that combining this with micro worms (someone on here sells starter cultures) would be more than enough. I looked into...
