Stupid Lfs....

Yea, how do you expect a Staff member to memorize the different characteristics of 80 different species, and 30 of those change every couple of weeks?

not to mention the new species being discoverd and the broad differences in the habitats fish live in.
Like Paul's said LFS staff dont know everything, some will be better at somethings than others.
Some will just be working for the money.
Know your stuff, respect the staff (no matter how dopy one maybe) and if your not sure
tell them you'll get back to them and do your homework.
After all, they cant force you to buy anything.

its quite simple do your own research
i always know when a good fish keeper comes in to my shop as he/she will already know all about the fish they are selecting
these customers are very rare but so refreshing for me,this is how i learn more about the fish im not really interested in keeping

yeh somtimes the lfs can be a bit dodge in their advice they didnt like my idea os a fishless cycle

Try telling them about fishless cycle lol. they will laugh in your face.

I don't listen to lfs cos they are just trying to run their business.

This website is a wonderful source of information from experts who have maintained fish tanks for years.

miss wiggle and Rdd*** are really experienced.

The best thing to do would be to go fish shops and take a pic and upload it on here. Someone should know what species it is and may have experience keeping it.

Martyn

its fine :)
Some LFS people know what they're doing.
Others dont.
Same as people online.

No hard feelings :)

Oh thats toooo true. I love the customers that know what there doing. It's a special occasion when they turn up though.

Urm....yeh. I'll give you a hint. Shop staff don't appreciate know it all kids trying to tell them how to do there job.

Any shop is going to say do a fish cycle as it's easiest to explain and run through without too much agro.

If customers are so into fish that are willing to do a fishless cycle they would of researched it first.

As long as you remember that the LFS primary agenda is to make money and you treat everything they say in light of that you can never go wrong.

It seems, from experience and from the attitudes of some people that most shop workers are on about the same moral level as used car salesmen.

I agree you should do your own research, but not everyone does and not all fish staff are reliable as we see from many posts on this site - and who suffers for it? the poor old fish!. In saying the shop staff are not to blame for wrong information what you are forgetting is they are not selling you an inanimate object they are selling live creatures and as such should be responsible for letting you know the correct way of keeping them without causing them suffering! Its no good them telling you a fish is ok for your tank when its going to grow far too big! Its no good them telling you that its a community fish if its going to shred your other fish etc!

A good idea would be to make all fish shops include a small printed detailed info list by each tank with information on the fish such as size, water conditions needed , if they are a community fish, special needs, what to feed etc . Then we wouldnt have to bother the staff and they wouldnt make mistakes and would just need to know the basics!
