I would say try out the Rena filstar XP3 for your tank. 3 compartments for media and should be more then enough filtration for your tank.

I gotta say this is a pretty difficult question... since both have their advantages and disadvantages. African tank -usually needs high PH ( some people even buy aragonite or crushed coral to buffer their PH to that level and its pretty expensive substrate) -very difficult to grow any plants...

you could have....Any new fish you get could have issues. Good Idea is to setup a hospital/ quarantine tank when you get new fish. That way you can observe new fish for a few weeks to make sure they are acting normal. You don't want to put meds in a tank full of healthy fish too, so...

We gonna need tank stats. Size of tank, stocking, tank readings ( nitrate, ammonia, nitrite.) how long have you had this pleco, any new fish added in recently, feeding routine etc.

Have you tested your water supply lately?? And are you using Prime to dechlorinate your water?? What temp is the tank sitting at currently?? are you attempting to increase surface agitation with a airstone or spongefilter??

The fishes you purchased are some of the most common and main stream fishes out in the market, So they could have brought in diseases when you put them in your tank. That's why I can not stress this enough, you should quarantine any fish you buy at a LFS unless you are positive of the fish's...

Well I said in my previous post that I couldn't resist picking up some new quality discus from my lfs....I decided to go wild, wild brown discus to be exact! :) The good thing about having a tank full of discus already is that they aren't shy with numbers! Eating and swimming out in the open...

Tank size should be good for a pack of them. I'm not sure of the Gouramis, and the shrimp would probly become dinner. I've also heard of Ottos sucking the sides on discus so that might be a no no.

Oh lord.... now you've done it. She has a pair of Wild Brown Discus ( old school) there to, and now I can't resist any longer and heading down there in an hour! I'm sure its gonna cost me well over 150 dollars if I do plan on getting the old school Discus!! :no: Wild list incoming too! TEFE...

Yeah my 2 BN pleco are poop monsters. Thinking of even selling one of them to reduce waste in the tank. Only thing that I know that would help you with poop is getting lots and lots of plants. As the poop acts like fertilizer for the soil.

I still use the old school method of sucking on the exhaust cap... Once you hear water coming through the system, STOP. Then turn it on and it should work like a charm. Though I have at one point kept sucking and tasted a little tank water.... :)

Do you work for a LFS?

Well it started with the purchase of my first sponge filter. It was a full size one and I bought a second one since I loved it so much. Now the sponge filter bug has bitten me and I'm buying sponge filters for everything!!! Not even the hospital tank will be spared!! :shout:

Yeah if you look at the flow picture then the water moves down to the bottom, sideways, then back up. But without any real way of sealing ( gaskets or O'rings) to prevent some of the water to go through the side media trays during operation hence there should be sideway flow during operation...

I would recommend getting a eheim classic... Bulletproof design and proven to out work and out last all the competition out there! Some people been using them for over 10+ years without any issues!

What about a group of flagtails. Though they do grow pretty slow, you might need a bigger tank in the future.

From that test strip I see you have nitrite.... Also your missing a ammonia tester. Try using liquid test kits as the strip one isn't as accurate. But with the current readings you going to need to do water changes till your nitrite is pure white.
