    An upward dive...

REALLY?! Mine are commons too. The guy in the shop said he'd find them a good home should they grow too big for the one I could provide them with. They're tiny at the moment. He said it'd take them years to grow...should I have believed him

    An upward dive...

My pl*co was doing something bizzare last night...from being a rather boring sucker on the bottom of the tank, he went through a phase of literally "SHOOTING" to the surface and back down again - really quick...he did it about 6 times in about an hour. Is this normal?! He seems happy enough in...

i have just done a 80% water change.

I was going to ask something similar actually...I found a snail today - about 5mm in diameter. I can't say it went to a point though. It MAY not be a trumpet snail. Are there any types of snails that I SHOULDN'T have in my tank? I did try to scoop it up, but a fish pushed it off the glass, and I...

    Dead Neon Tetra in Filter

The title sums it up nicely...or not so nicely... I bought 12 neon tetras last week...and I keep finding them (4 so far) in my filter. One of which swam away for a little while, but passed away on the bottom of the tank later on the same day. I don't know whether they just get sucked into the...

    Neon Tetras mating

I saw this video last night...and guess what I've just witnessed in my own tank tonight?!!!! YUP! - Pretty much the same! :D I know absolutely nothing about tetra breeding...gestation time, size of eggs etc...I guess they'd disappear in 2 seconds flat in my tank too mind...!

    Livebearers...

I think you should be congratulated for being so blunt and honest here. I understand completely where you are coming from, but can't stop thinking I'm one of these people myself. And like you said, there's no way of stopping them from mating, other than not having them in the first place. -_-...

    How big is my tank?

Agreed. I LOVE maths...it's little questions like this that keep me going!...If anyone ever has a problem/debate which involves using maths...let me know! I may not be right, but I DO get a lot of enjoyment from them! My last one was - which is best, a toploader or a side loading...

    Gravid spot

Lol...! Thanks, that's great. I was just trying to work out quite how pregnant they all are. They all had spots when I bought them (surprise surprise  ), and that was only the 27th of April...so I guess I'm none the wiser afterall! All I DO know is that they'd been in a female-only...

    Gravid spot

I KNOW what the gestation period is...what I was asking was, how long is it, usually, before the spot first appears...presuming the spot disappears after giving birth... I guessed it's something that I'll learn from experience, but having very little at present, I thought I'd ask people who...

    Gravid spot

Any suggestions?! That is, how long it takes from doing the deed to showing a gravid spot? (I'm asking to try and suss out my guppies) :D

    Where has my fish gone?!!

Me too, this morning... Only to find THREE in the filter this evening! A pregnant guppy (God only knows how SHE got there), and a neon tetra, swimming nicely within the filter, and another tetra squished between the sponges and the filter wall. He eventually swam freely, although I'm not sure...

    Another pregnant guppy question

I "think" my molly gave birth not so long ago...she was large, and then all of a sudden she became very slim (I was at work  ). Now, if she gave a 'normal' birth (i.e. didn't abort, or anything like that), and the all the fry were eaten by the others (probably my boysterous male molly)...

    ID please?!

Cool. When I get the medicine tomorrow, should I be thinking of isolating the two lone rangers to treat them, or is there no harm in adding the medicine to the whole 125 litre tank? You're so good to me, innocent fish-keeper as I am!

D'oh...now I know why the guy gave me 12 instead of the 10 I asked for! :grr:

    Another pregnant guppy question

Thanks! And congrats! Although...that puts me back in square one! - not knowing whether to leave her where she is (risking losing the whole pantomime), or separate her (and risk stressing her out)!! So maybe I'll let her be, and if nature takes it's course then so be it...we'll have a...

    ID please?!

This afternoon, I asked for 10 neon tetras...I was given 12. I'm not complaining (!) But, on viewing them tonight, I've noticed something VERY peculiar. 10 of them swim nicely in a shoal...(how pretty  ) but another 2 have never swam with the others. One is hovering too close to the back...

    Another pregnant guppy question

Well, yeah...that's what I meant...the fact that's she's pigging out on food is a sign that she has a while to go yet, surely! (in addition to the not-extremely-large-belly) It's just that I missed my molly's first fry whilst I was in work, purely because I expected her to be bigger than she...

    Another pregnant guppy question

Cool...at least I managed to get that photo up! My new skill for the day! Now...as you can see, she isn't THAT large (although her dark spot is markedly large - it's slightly underestimated from viewing this photo...) She's also been eating an algae wafer I gave the plecos...surely she...

    Another pregnant guppy question

I've read that heavily pregnant guppies tend to be fairly still etc... My pregnant guppy is nothing but this (just spent ages trying to get her still enough to take a photo!) - Nothing odd about that, I hear you say...she's just not HEAVILY pregnant yet... However, I have also read that they...

    Ammonia level

I reckon you just need some 'good' bacteria which will eventually break the ammonia down to nitrite...which will eventually break down to nitrate... Or at least, that's how I understand it ;)

    Bank Holiday Beckons

    1. I've heard it's very feasible. Anyone disagree, and think I should put a "weekend block" in?... I'll be away from Friday morning until Monday evening. 2. Is it worth putting the lights on a timer (I have one here somewhere!), or will it not matter much? Surely, it's best for the plants if I...

    Ragged Tail

All I have is the 3 mollies and 4 guppies...in a 125 litre tank Can I use table salt?! Or when you say salt, do you mean a special 'fish salt'? And about how much would you add? Sorry to be a pain!
  33. P

    Algae eaters

D'oh. I had an inclin that it wouldn't be quite that easy! Is there any one of them (at-the-bottom-of-the-tank-things-with-a-sucky-mouth-thing) you'd recommend more for a community tank than others? Any I should avoid?

    Ragged Tail

Nope, not at all. That's good, I hope...not bad?!

    Ragged Tail

Now, I KNOW I was silly...I accepted whatever guppy the lfs guy put in the bag, and didn't check them until I got home. Please don't tell me off. I KNOW I shouldn't have, and I won't do it again. Promise! The 4 guppies were introduced to my tank today. One has a ragged tail. Now, I've read that...

    Algae eaters

I'm a bit confused by jargon! I'm relatively new to this, and am currently (so far, successfully) stocking a 125 litre tank. Next, I was planning on some algae eaters (unless someone has a reason for me not to!). I'm aware that there are MANY different types of algae eaters out there...My...

    Flouride in the water

Hiya guys, I'm a dentist, and 18 months down the line, most of us are STILL fighting for this fluoride move...this is as much as I know at the moment... There ARE areas within the UK (and other parts of the world I expect) which have NATURAL fluoride in the tap water supply. There are ALSO areas...
