Any suggestions?! That is, how long it takes from doing the deed to showing a gravid spot? (I'm asking to try and suss out my guppies) :D

Usually about a month, but it depends on the age and size of the fish. Smaller fish, and younger fish sometimes have a shorter pregnancy time. :)

I KNOW what the gestation period is...what I was asking was, how long is it, usually, before the spot first appears...presuming the spot disappears after giving birth...

I guessed it's something that I'll learn from experience, but having very little at present, I thought I'd ask people who have

Oh, I'm so sorry. Still tired from my late night last night. I'm sorry!

In my experience, pretty soon. I would say...within a week. Since the gravid spot is the fries' eyes, I guess as soon as they start developing you'd see it.

Lol...! Thanks, that's great. I was just trying to work out quite how pregnant they all are. They all had spots when I bought them (surprise surprise  ), and that was only the 27th of April...so I guess I'm none the wiser afterall! All I DO know is that they'd been in a female-only tank at the shop for about a week. So all I can deduct is that they're at LEAST 2 weeks pregnant I suppose...! B)

I DID try to put one in a breeding compartment last night, but she'd escaped it by the morning, and hadn't given birth... I give up on trying to be clever. She can have them when she has them, and if they're eaten, then it's a shame, but there we go...! :fun:

Thanks for your help, once more! You and Wilder must be glued to your computers!

Yeah, it can be hard to tell when you get them from a shop. After they get pregnant the first time, it seems like they ALWAYS have a gravid spot after that!

It's hard to be clever with Livebearers...they always find a way to prove you wrong! :p Sometimes what I do, though, is record the day on my calendar when a female last gave birth, then go out about a month from there. It seems to work pretty well most of the time.

Actually, I don't think I am here as much as Wilder...just happened to be here in the right place at the right time!
