    Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

I feel most of us eventually "will" get covid at some point or other. I like many, went through it. I am older and I chose to work through the pandemic rather than hiding at home and getting a check, yes, I had that choice. Eventually I got it and got over it. It hit me hard and got over it as...

    Calling All Old Timers

On the marine side, lion fish was popular along with the bat fish (pinnatus) both of these were a beauty and super hardy. Had them for a few years.

I’m also tall 6’2 and long arms, I still can’t get my head around someone managing a 120g alone. You have some left over strength there old man, I would have paid to see that! God bless you.

    Calling All Old Timers

When I first started the hobby in the 70's and 80's my fascination were Arowanas, they were easy to get then, about 1" to 2" could be had for about $10 or under. I eventually had to rehome these fish to someone with huge tanks and that eventually made me realize these fish were not for me. Back...

    Calling All Old Timers

How did you manage to do this alone?! I get the cavemen technics, I also used to work with metal and some heavy stuff but you still had to take it down from a stand and up or down some steps I'm sure. I'm in my 60's very healthy and fit (brag) and I've been downsizing tanks, I figured if I can't...

    Calling All Old Timers

Corner box filters were the thing back in the 70s. I didn’t get serious till the 80s where I learned about cycling setting up marine tanks with under gravel filters, which btw worked like a champ. Eventually gave up on saltwater fish for many reasons one of them $$$. Went back to fresh water in...

    Fish gasping for breath

Because many of us would love to help you but guessing doesn't really help. More information (tank size, number of fish, parameters, filter etc) would help us give you a more precise answer, don't you agree?

Tough to help with so little or no information.

    Fish gasping for breath

Why would you think it's overstocked? What size tank and how many fish? Nice angels! If they were gasping for oxygen they would be on top, hard to tell from a short clip, could be stress?

    Persistent low ammonia spike

You mentioned you emptied and cleaned the filters? What exactly do you mean? Cleaning filters is something that can deplete your beneficial bacteria since this is where it resides and the cycle takes place. The filter media should never be changed only slightly rinsed in some aquarium water.

12” front to back, 36 long, I forget the height. You can’t find these, I can’t.

    Re-sealing a tank, worth it?

So, as I was cleaning the old 40g deciding what to do with it I thought I'd try peeling some of the old silicone, this was an accident waiting to happen, parts of the silicone are just cleanly peeling right off with little to no resistance. I guess at this point I'm going for the re-seal. Since...

    Re-sealing a tank, worth it?

Is a wider bead better? I read the silicone should spread just as wide as the thickness of the glass, I have a new 40g that the silicone spreads 2-3 times the thickness of the glass, I see some guys using masking tape to keep it narrow.

    Re-sealing a tank, worth it?

Thank you for all the replies. I have 40g that is just a matter of time before it starts to leak, it's well over 10 years and the silicone is mostly gone or peeling back. Most of the videos and tutorials show the removal of only the outer silicone, what happens to the old silicone between the...

    African Cichlid beginner…

I totally agree with this. Someone in this forum once described mbunas as a rowdy bunch of guys coming out of a bar at closing time, after all, they are cichlids. Still, I love these fish and I have been down the road where I have said to myself "I'm done with them" but I keep coming back. I've...

    Betta fish SUDDENLY losing color

I've done a lot of reading and studying bettas though I never owned one, from what I read they have a shorter lifespan than most other fish, somewhere in the 4-5 years average in captivity, please someone correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps the discoloration can be the fish not being able to handle...

    African Cichlid beginner…

Yes, Peacocks can be stunning. People keep all male tanks but again, aggression can be a problem. I don't know if a 55g would sustain too many peacocks for a long period of time, I believe they can get bigger than mbuna and it would definitely be a problem in that size tank.

BTW…What filter are you talking about? I use two old Fluval 203 canisters in mine and does very well. i concentrate more on water changes and not over feeding.

    African Cichlid beginner…

I have kept and still keep mbuna in 40 and 55 gallon tanks. They are aggressive (territorial) and I always keep the tank slightly overstocked, this seems to cut back on aggression, for the 55, around 12-15 seems to work, I always start a new mbuna tank with juveniles. Haps and peacocks can get...

    Canister filter tubing dirty

Well so, I decided to get new hoses for my two old Fluval 203 filters which were around two decades old and dirty, Home Depot or Lowes here in the states have different sizes and I decided to buy a few feet a bit oversized in diameter but no issues with fit. The flow has increased I would say...

    Urgent: Oscar is sick.

Don't worry about your carbon, decades of fish keeping I've never used it and my tanks are sparkling clean. Do not change the filter media. Make sure your basic water parameters are ok but regardless the parameters, do lots of water changes. Oscars are very hardy fish and they can heal with lots...

    Ich heat-treatment questions

I am one of those that don't add anything to a tank. I've had a couple of ich infestations in the past, simply raising the temp (80 or 82f) and lots of water changes takes care of it. Oh, easy on the food.

    Do fish eat lettuce?

    Yes. My mbuna devour lettuce.

    Who keeps barbs?

Had a tiger barb tank 55g for about two years, these little guys are crazy! They look good and move around in a group which is fun to watch, little or no pecking but they are super hyper, like a kid after overdosing on sweets. Forget tank mates, they are super-fast aggressive feeders, the only...

Dropped my betta fish on floor!

I had an arowana jump out of the tank through a small hole I had put on the cover for a heater, good thing I was there to pick up the beast! These guys are notorious jumpers since in the wild this is how they catch their prey.

    Some fish aren't growing

From my personal experience, water changes are key to growth, there are other factors, food and tank size. I have literally seen fish grow faster the more water I change. Also you might be stuck with fish where their growth was stunted prior to you getting them.

I found some wood at a park/Can plants you buy really carry fish diseases??

Of course it is possible to carry diseases on plants from one tank to another. As far as the wood, well that depends on what wood it is, what tree did it come from, is it soft, dense, does it have bark still on it? If it you really think it is good for the tank, a good boiling is good, also...

Fish (& other animals) know when its time to go

IMO, human emotion is a distance away from animals but to stay in topic, yes, animals do know and feel when it's their time, at least I can speak for cats. Our last cat hid from us for about a week, found a cozy dark place to spend it's last days, no matter how many times I would bring it out...

    Back to Africans, again.

I feel pretty much as you about these fish. What happened to me in the past, the more I lost over months or years, the less the population and the more the agression, what size tank do you have and how many fish?

Getting bacteria onto sponge of sponge filter only?

The filter media houses your bacteria. I do this and works fine. Placing the seeded sponge in with the media of your new filter is fine, I also squeeze some of the "dirt" of the established media on to the new one. I wouldn't bother with the "bacteria in a bottle" thing.

    Brand new filter not working

I have two of these working for about 3+ years. One of them just last week started doing the same as yours, there was an air leak going through the flow control knob. Turns out there is a small O ring just under the flow control knob that had rotted, not having a spare O ring, I just siliconed...
