April Fish Of The Month Competition Entries

You tar all Killi's with the same brush my good sir! Non-annuals tend to live a few years at least.   I was tempted to enter my baby Cory but will try to add a bit of variety at least:       Verification will be up later.

    Borneo Suckers

They generally require much cooler waters than most tropical fish, a very high rate of flow and highly oxygenated water. The highest temperature they are generally kept in is around 23 degrees Celsius. I would personally not want to try keeping them in the average tropical community.

    Disgusted At The Lfs

He means the 'Glo-Fish', GM Zebr Danio's. I am happy to say they are banned here in the UK, i'm pretty sure you can still get dyed fish but they are pretty rare due to the negative reputation and PR that comes with them; the shops i go to have never had them, they seem to genuinely care about...

    Low-tech Juwel Rio 180

Well, it would appear i am truly awful at this whole 'keeping a journal' thing :P I will try to get some pictures later and will post some thoughts on my longterm plans.

    Injured Pangasius

Difficult to judge without actually seeing the wound (I feel your pain with trying to get a picture) but i would recommend keeping them as relaxed as possible, maybe upping the water changes a bit to keep the quality as high as possible and dealing with anything else as it comes up.

    Allpondsolution Externals

The surface skimmer does not have to be included, i have it on one of mine and left it off the other. I sleep with one of mine in my room, i find it quiet. Pretty decent flow rate and plenty of room for media, or whatever you want in it. There is a bit of a trick (i find anyway) to opening the...

    Worried About My Favourite Fish!

I was under the impression that Platy's are not actually a very socially orientated (shoaling) fish?

How To Know If Floorboards Will Support This Weight?

That would unfortunately not work, aquariums are permanent dead weights that are distributed differently to people. It would be nice if it could work though, would sure save a lot of messing around.

    Clown Loach Emergancy

I'm no expert on Loaches but could it maybe be some kind of parasite? Any other symptoms, maybe a picture. I really would not recommend taking out a place the fish like to hide when they are ill, could be pretty stressful for them. Are all the other fish alright?

    Mystery Fry

My money would be on it being a Molly or Guppy, possibly a Zebra Danio. Molly-Guppy intebreeding is possible, not too common though from what i know.

    Help !

My money is on the Killifish (which species by the way?) or Angel ripping him apart, though it could be the Tetras depending on the species. What size tank are they in? This mix of fish is definitely not ideal, a bloodbath waiting to happen due to the (possibly) aggressive a dominant...

    New To Cichlids

Old World Cichlids require pretty much the opposite requirements (on a few different levels) to New World Cichlids, i don't i have ever actually seen anybody keep them together successfully longterm. Not to mention a lot of Rams are shy and easily dominated, certainly not something you want to...

How To Know If Floorboards Will Support This Weight?

Get a structural engineer in to check it, he only way to be sure.

    Why?

Leif Erikson's Vinland anyone? The way i understand it is that there is no solid proof the Chinese made it past Africa and that the rest is just speculation, please correct me if i am wrong. The Vikings are the earliest with any actual solid archaeological evidence to back it up, though i did...

Haze On Glass - 1 Inch Starting At Sand Substrate Upwards ?

Looks like it could just be a few diatoms, if this is the case they should wipe away easily.

    Just Wondering

Somebody once said 'Don't argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience'. I prefer to think of myself as looking down on them from my tower of non-idiocy and dropping bricks of knowledge upon their faces. *Sighs* I really need to get me a tower.  ...

    Testing The Water

Oh API is pretty reliable and I myself use it as the stuff that is totally accurate costs ridiculous amounts and is just not necessary for the vast majority of tanks. I just meant that i was not sure API tests would even pick up any changes made by these things unless they were pretty...

    Testing The Water

I would not take feeding into the equation as food takes time to begin rotting down. To be honest i personally would not take any of those things into the equation seeing how API are hardly the most accurate things out there. If it makes you feel more secure then you could always test at the...

I Must Be Doing Something Right.... I Hope

Hey, sorry again for the delay in replying. The large (and also very dominating plant) is Indian Fern, it can be found very easily for very little money on eBay. It does not look nearly as impressive at first. Here is this tank when i very first started it (i moved the contents from an old 10...

Any particular plans for your new 99p pagoda?

    Terracotta Ornaments

Yep, what Cezza said. There are loads of terracotta aquarium ornaments out there; i just kind of assumed the garden ornament would be painted, i guess it kind of makes sense that it isn't.   Like i say though, if you want to be really sure there is alway the taste test..........

    What Are These Fish?

Electric Blue Rams i would say. Renowned for being tricky and unforgiving to keep, although that does vary depending on who you ask, some people seem to have great luck while others, well..... not so much. Tend to be the kind of fish you want to build the tank around, ideally a biotope.Sensitive...

    Terracotta Ornaments

Do you have a picture? I would maybe be wary of something if it is painted and not specifically labelled to be safe/non-toxic. I personally tried to avoid anything not specifically for fish when i still purchased ornaments, though i would often be tempted by unique things.   You could always try...

4 Nerite Snails And Now Eggs Everywhere!

They will breed and lay eggs but the young will not survive in freshwater, i believe they need brackish water for their larval stage or something along those lines.           No need to worry as your water would not be brackish unless you deliberately made it so, otherwise your drinking water...

Need A Decent, Quiet External Filter

I have the All Pond Solutions 1000 L/H and the 1400 L/H on my two tanks, I find they are easy to maintain, have great flow, are affordable and I would say the UV steriliser is worth the extra cash whether or not it actually does much as it is not much at all.  Practical Fishkeeping did a very...

    Mystery Plant

I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to ID'ing plants but i think i have had this stuff before, it got ripped to shreds pretty quickly but i could be mistaking it for something else. Like i said, pretty hopeless. If you are looking to get started with plants then i would recommend Indian Fern (or...

    Betta Got In A Fight.

Just to check, are you absolutely sure that the fish got through the gap or is it possible Ezio jumped over the divider? The only reason i ask is because i have heard many times of Betta's doing whatever they can to get to each other if they can see each other and they are indeed very capable...

    Betta Got In A Fight.

Clean water, regular water changes of a fairly large volume are what i recommend when fish need healing and that has always worked for me. He should be back to full health soon enough.   On another note, can your Betta's see one another? I would always have a blacked out partition in order to...

    How Many Tetra's In A 260Ltr Tank?

Can i really get on your nerves? Yes? Good :P   I personally feel it's impossible to answer, if you want to keep all of those Tetra's then there are a few different variations on number that would work just fine. Are those definitely the Tetra's you want to keep or are you still looking at your...

    Please Make Them Stop

Calm down guys, lets not end up saying something we'll regret.   I generally wouldn't worry about it, i have a group of 6 and after a couple of spawns i have only had 1 fry survive and he was saved by the external filter, with only 2 of them i doubt all of the egg are even getting fertilised. If...

Red Clawed Crab Lying On Back!

I agree with all of this. I couldn't even keep them alive for more than a few months with their very own brackish tank dedicated to them.

I Must Be Doing Something Right.... I Hope

I really need to remember to get round to posting replies on threads....   Yeah, i think the fish enjoy only being disturbed when they are fed or given a water changes, though having said that i am just about to do a major trim and clean, the plants tend to get all tangled up if left for too...

I Must Be Doing Something Right.... I Hope

Before you begin reading i must apologise for the absolutely unforgivable state of my tank, i really need to do something about the algae and i know i should be more thorough and regular about cleaning it but i've been ill so i'm afraid thats just the way it is. I also must apologise for my...

Giving Up On Neon Tetra Completely

Pretty much this stuff, annoys me sometimes the way people instantly put down Neons as an option just because they have had a bad experience. I have only had one neon (over years of keeping them) who displayed signs that could even come close to NTD and to be honest i'm really not sure it...

    I've Been So Stupid!

What Techen said, you would be best returning the Cardinals if possible or otherwise rehoming them. Then you could keep a Betta or/and (depends on temperament) some shrimp/snail(s).

Does Anyone Prefer Gravel Over Sand

My sand never looks messy, i just make sure there is plenty of flow and that the lowest point of my sand bed is at the back, near the filter. I like the colour of my sand in my current setup (the 180litre that is), even though some people say it tends to wash out the colours of their fish i find...

    Siamese Fighting Fish

Could be a good addition, depending on how mature and stable the tank is. I believe tanks are usually recommended to be at least 6 months old and even then certain people tend to have their Oto's just die on them. Not trying to put you off of them (they certainly are nice little fish), just...

    100L Or 78L? Confused?

Funny thing is that it is probably somebodies entire job to figure out stuff like this. You would have thought making sure the right amount of water fits into the tank just right would be one of the checks they perform, i guess not.......

    Siamese Fighting Fish

^^^What he said, i would always advise against keeping a Betta with any other kind of Anabantoid, it is kind of a tragedy waiting to happen in my experience.
