29.5 Gallon fish tank - Amazonian inspired

I might go for :

  • 6 otocinclus
  • 8 neon tetra
  • 6 glowlight tetra
  • 1 dwarf gourami
  • 6 inpaichthys kerri
I love Otos and I also love Rio Xingu gravel from Dennerle and I know rams and kuhli won't thrive if i use it.... My otos have no issue with it.
The otos, neons, emporers and glowlights are all better off in schools of 10-12. The neons especially look much better in a larger group. I'd pick two of those and stock a larger group of each.
And buyer beware with dwarf gourami. A lot of them have iridovirus. It's deadly and incurable.

So...is it ok to use filter floss like this to protect the bottom of the fish tank from scratches by the hardscape? Or will it generate problems?

The only thing I can think of, is that it could collect debris, turn brown and potentially smell, depending on how much organics it collects. Then you may have the hassle of having to remove and change it. None of these issues maybe significant though.

i have 5 otos with my beta in a 15 gallon tank. the otos are fine and very active.

I decided to keep it south american.amazonian so i'm going for

6 otos
10 neon tetra
10 glowlight tetra (not to be mistaken with glo-tetra)
1 or maybe 2 long fin electric blue ramirezi

The glowlights and neons will have a nice effect together.

Hardscape is here and I'll place it inside tomorrow. i manage to get 2 huge and fantastic looking mangrove roots with a lot of hollows and places for fish to swin through and hide. Plus a small piece of mangrove bark that creates a nice "cave" when palced next to one of the roots and also i got 2 dragon stones because, yes, i know i said that it will be amazonian/south american, but i just need to have at least one Anubias. I love those plants. For the substrate i'll use JBL Aquabasis+ topped with JBL Sansibar Black (which is actually a very light gray...). More photos tomorrow.

For the filtration I'm going with this baby

Is Angelfish a good idea for a centerpiece? The tank is almost 30 gallons (112liter), 80cm long, 35 cm wide and 40 cm tall.
This article shows 29 gallon is fine. I have kept 1 or 2 at a time in a 29 gallon with success. Also, a 29 gallon is (I think) 3" taller than a 40 breeder and angelfish need vertical space.

So the filter comes with a very good sponge, some carbon and ceramic cilinders. I've added some Nubios rings and topped it with filter floss. And also a sponge on the intake.

Got 4 anubias, one huge java fern (latifolia), a small hygrophilla compacta, a small hydrocotyle (from the other tank), some floating plants (also from the other tank) and 10 neon tetras. But when i arrived home and put them in the tank they were 11 (yupiiii).

Next i want 5 more anubias, 2 or 3 amazon swords, a lotus and an aponogeton. With them i'll get 10 glowlight tetras (not glo-tetras).

After that i plan to get a couple of medium sized stem plants and the centerpiece fish: a longfin electric blue ram.

It tool the neons around 30 minutes to start moving through all the tank. And a bit over 2 hours to get their colors back. They don't school that much, mostly each with his own business, very active, sometimes chasing each other and oh boy they sure are active when feeding time comes :)))

I'll get the Canon out tomorrow and try to take some photos.

I gotta follow this 😎

So I've ordered one of those chinese CO2 kits with citric acid and baking soda. Thing is, the kit comes with a bubble counter that has a built in check valve. Thing is I also got an ISTA 3in1 diffuser that also has bubble counter and check valve. Will those two work well or should i go and search for a simple diffuser?

got two panda cory (i'll get two more tomorrow, those were the only ones in store, but on mondays they refill the fish stock). for bottom dwellers those two sure like to explore the entire tank, going up and down the large plants and also they sure do seem to love the driftwood, and of course are exploring every inch of the driftwood. I have to say, panda cory are very cute.

Short update. Got more plants. right now the plants in the tank are:
-Java Ferns
-Anubias
-Hygrophila Compacta
-Alternanthera
-Hydrocotyle (the large leaf variety)
-Echinodorus (2 plants but they look very different - one has oval leaves on top of very long petioles and one has long and wide leaves more like a java fern or crypt, and are reddish)
......
I will add one cryptocoryne and one bolbitis and i'll try my luck again with red lotus and an aponogeton.

Fish update:
-10 neon tetras (there were 11 but one died. i think he was sick cause he was sitting alone, hiding near the bottom of the tank)
-4 panda cory
-5 otto
-8 glowlight tetra

The neons are mostly doing their own thing, while the glowlight school together and are such a beautiful thing to see.

I'll add 1 or 2 (if there's an already established pair, i'll get them both) electric blue ram and i'll call it done.

For some reason the Otos love tetra flakes for...tetra fish.
Some photos of the tank.
