I have a 75 gallon tank with 8 Rainbow fish, 2 Angel fish, 5 five banded barbs, Otocinclus, and snails. As of yesterday one of my Rainbow fish is bullying all the other Rainbows. He has decided he wants the right side of the tank all for himself and won’t let any of the others come into that area. If they do, he chases them away. My water parameters are good. The tank is about 2 1/2 months old. All the fish have been in there for awhile. I’ve heard of a time out. I only have another 10 gallon tank with 3 Platus, a few Otocinclus, and some snails. Both tanks are heavily planted. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

What sort of rainbowfish?
How big are the fish?
Can you post pictures and video of the fish so we can see the behaviour?
What are the tank dimensions (length x width x height)?

There are a few rainbowfish species that get territorial. I'm curious as to which ones you have.

I had a Boesmani male that was like that...until I got another male bigger than him....now everyone is sharing space like civilised fish

It’s a Bosemani. He just swims back and forth watching over “his 1/2 domain”. He mostly chases away the other Rainbows… Turquoise, Millenium and another that I can’t remember the name at the moment. The tank is 48L x 21H x 18D. He is the largest right now at about 2.5 - 3”. I was always feeding on that right side. But now I’ve changed to the left. He doesn’t bother them at feeding time…probably too busy eating.

I have a line of boesemani I've bred for quite a few generations, and every once in a while I get a hyper male like that. There's not much to do, especially in an all male tank. It's not what I'd consdier average behaviour for the species, but like I said, they show up.

@GaryE, we were both wrong :)

It's just because he has matured sooner and is bigger than the others and showing them he wants to be boss. When the other males get to the same size they will all spar with each other.

You want at least 8 rainbowfish in the tank and up to 20 for that size tank. But 8-12 would be a good number considering you have other fish in there. Try to have some females in the tank for the males. They show better colours and will spend most of the day showing off to each other in an attempt to impress the girls. Try to have similar numbers of males and females.

You can mix different species of rainbowfish in the same tank. Just keep species that grow to a similar size.

When the plants get taller, you can leave some tall and use it like a wall in the aquarium. He might spend his time there saying this is mine.

Make sure they get plenty of plant matter in their diet. rainbowfish need at least half of their diet to be plant based. You can use vege flakes/ pellets, goldfish food, pumpkin, zucchini and other fruits/ vegs, and have Duckweed on the surface. I know people hate Duckweed but rainbowfish love it. You can grow it outside or in a spare tank and add some each week for the fish to eat. It has softer leaves when grown in the shade or under coverglass compared to grown in full sun.

Thank you so much. I have 3 male Bosemani, 1 Turquoise, 2 Millenium (male and female), and 2 similar to Millenium (male and female). Then 2 Angel fish, 10 Otocinclus, the 5 five banded barbs and 10 snails (nerite and mystery).

I guess it will take awhile for the others to grow. Or I could buy another large one! :)

The millennium rainbowfish is Glossolepis pseudoincisus and the males go red, females go bronze.

There is also the New Guinea red rainbow (Glossolepis incisus) that looks very similar to G. pseudoincisus except it gets bigger and more aggressive than G. pseudoincisus. It is not recommended to keep these 2 species together because the male G. incisus will bash the male G. pseudoincisus. The females also look almost identical and they hybridise to produce fertile offspring that are not wanted.

I would get a female M. boesemani, 3 more M. lacustris and get rid of G. incisus if you have them and get another pr of G. pseudoincisus.

Thanks for all the information.
