Hole In The Head?

Photos of fish are hard to get haha! They weren't very obliging. Yep fingers crossed!

I've just fed a block of frozen daphnia, and this critter was in there too. Any idea what it is?

Would you believe, whilst trying to get a photo of that, Alan came to see what I was doing and I got a much better photo of him. He must have known I wasn't looking at him. Awkward fish!

I hope you removed the critter. If in doubt take it out!

I can see the tiny pits in Alan's head in that photo and he is very thin. Got everything crossed for him

Yes I took it out. Alan has eaten flake and pellets this morning. Still a good sign. Day 3 of octozin today.
He also ate most of the algae wafer I put in. The others didn't get a look in! Had to put another half in!

have a look on the Hexamita thread that I wrote. There's a new medication for it that Wilder has shared. If the octozin doesn't work this time around it might be worth doing a large water change and trying something new :)

Regarding to food it looks all right. It is strange that he eats algae wafer though. Apisto's do need carnivorous foods. This, with its old age won't do any good. SO try to get him to eat more carnivorous foods, and a lot of them to get him fatter.
The other fish do not look very skinny. So I would suggest keep on feeding frozen foods and hope the medication will do the trick this time.

However, looking at the other foods, frozen carnivorous dried foods, this shouldn't be a problem.

Watch out with bloodworms. Apisto's don't digest them very well. Besides that do these larvae have tiny hooks. These hooks can cause constipation, especially if your fish is not very healthy. So try to avoid these.

Regarding to your question about the daphnia, that is a little fly. These are harmless and come very often with dried or frozen daphnia. So you could find a lot more of them.

That's great I'll have a look thanks Akasha.

Thanks for the heads up on the bloodworms Bubbelzzz I didn't know that! Does that apply to frozen too as I've never fed them live. Glad there's no need to worry about the fly. I'm feeding twice a day, frozen once and a variety of dried once, both soaked in Epsom salts.

I'll try and upload a couple of videos.

it sounds like you are doing everything right. Alan's weight loss might be down to age. See how he goes :)

I forgot to mention that the holes appear to be filling in!! I hope they are healing and that it's not something more sinister. Fingers crossed!

Frozen bloodworms do also posses those hooks. So don't feed too much of them.

Good to hear that the holes are filling. Hope he will heal quickly.

Ok thanks I'll avoid those then. Plenty of other things I can feed. I hope be heals quickly too! Watch this space.

Here's a photo of part of the tank in general, got some of everything in there I think! There are a few more rummy noses and kuhlis out of the shot, and my little clown plec, but most are in there. Just so you get an idea of the setup.

I've got a couple of videos including one of Alan eating, but when I try to upload them I get an error message saying that I'm not permitted to upload that type of file.

Totally off subject Akasha but I've seen you mention a couple of times in other threads that you're in Yorkshire. I'm in East Yorkshire and just wondered which LFS you use?

I'm in North Yorkshire. I use 2 main one's, I use Harrogate Aquatics which is in Moorlands garden centre near Knaresborough and Pet Safari which is inside Stephen H Smith's garden centre which is in Otley. Both are great fish stores and their staff are fish keepers and so know their stuff if you need help or advice

I've also used Maidenhead Aquatics near York for food - they always have a good supply of the New Era foods that I like to use. (New Era has just changed it's name to Vitalis)

Great thanks! Always good to know about other recommended LFSs. They are both an hour or so away so worth a trip out The best one around here is the Maidenhead at Beverley, the staff there are also fish keepers and give out some pretty good advice!

Happy to say that Alan's holes still look like they are filling in and everyone is enjoying the extra frozen food! I love watching the corys and kuhlis snuffling around especially at feeding time.

Thank you both so much for you help again.
