I usually use my 18-55mm and get pretty close.  I mostly have pics of my cichlids because they always swim up to me to beg for food.:)
I have a hard time trying to get a good pic of my angels.
For both of the angel pics I posted I sat across the room with my 300mm zoom lens. I think it would be clearer if I could get closer but if they are aware of my presence they are either hiding or right in front of the camera which is hard to get pics of, too skinny like you said.

I love how you guys are using Nikons and such while I'm still using my phone's camera. Great pictures to both of you
Thank you! I utilize the camera phone quite a bit, too. Sometimes it's so much more convenient and they can take pretty good pictures too. The betta picture I posted was from my phone :)

Here is a pic of my Lemon Jake.  He is only about 2.5 inches.  He is really starting to show great color.  I can't wait to see what he turns out to look like as an adult. newer1edit - Copy.jpg

Ryan...I was going to ask how many tanks you have until I viewed your profile....5 tanks!!  Somebody has MTS!!  LOL  I am envious...I have been running my 1 tank for four months and I'm already itching for another!  This thread doesn't help!!

It's about to be 6 tanks pretty soon.  I hear you about the thread.  Everybody has such cool fish.

I am very bad about "oh, I like that fish. Time to buy another tank".  I saw the platinum angels at the LFS, kept telling myself I couldn't have one for two days, and then went out and bought a tank because it became too much XD

Same here ficklefins. If I show any interest in a fish, a tank is purchased, and the equipment bought. 11 tanks and counting...

So I love all the pics with the black backgrounds I see on here so I thought I would give it a try.  Not as good as I would like but hey its a start....I think I need to get some new photo editing software

Awesome pics!  This thread makes me want to get a decent camera...

Thx Cory! :) Yeah I think the Barb pic came out better than the Gourami. For some reason the editing software had an easier time isolating the Tiger than Gourami.

That's not too bad rak.  It's a hard process for sure.  If your thinking about new photo editing software, I could borrow one of your pics in this thread and show you what that adobe lightroom can do.  It's so much easier than photoshop imo.

Which software was that?

I use Photoshop Elements 6. I think it's been 5 or 6 years since I bought it....I think they are up to Elements 12 now!! :) So it's pretty old. I would imagine the software and options for editing are far more advanced now.

That would be awesome thanks! Even though Elements is a stripped down version of Photoshop I always found it difficult to use without having a degree in graphic design or something like that! Lol

I've never used any photo editing software, but seeing these photos makes me want to go out and buy one!
