Neo-Savoryi Update.

So as it turns out, not all Neo's are as stupid as brichardi.....spawning and spawning until they choke themselves out of tank...I have had these guys since I think february and they have only had 4 spawns, all within a week of each other or so...they have not spawned since around march, which tells me that they are in fact smart enough to know that they have had enough babies for now. Good fishies. Anyway, thought I would share them with you as they are growing up. They are definitely not the best looking fish, but they are certainly rare. I found out around a week ago that I have 4 of 8 wild caught specimens in western Canada, if not all of Canada. There are no distributors in the east that have even heard of them yet...none that we know of anyway....going to try and get them over there sometime soon, through a local distributor. Don't know if they will catch on though...they just aren't as flashy and pretty as most cichlid owners want their fish to be, these guys are all personality. Crazy buggers. The tank is as natural as I can have it be right now...only the 3 parents and the babies...no cleaning crew whatsoever...tried to put a couple plecos in there before...fair sized ones....but the savoryi killed one and almost the other too....meanies. Anyway, what I am trying to say is, don't mind the wallpaper of algae, because the fish don't.

Here is a picture of one of the babies that seems to have had it's tail chewed off at an earlier age....has had no trouble with life, having no tail...he has been like this for about 2.5 months and holds his own. No problem. I have a brichardi like this too....odd.

I like the algae. It'll give those babies some character, right? As far as I'm concerned all these fry have it too easy these days.

So I figure you are asking why they are all missing fins....well they are SUPER aggressive. The parents have been teaching them to be REALLY mean ever since they were born...literally holding no punches when attacking the babies...although the parents are no where near as fast as the babies. VERY interesting fish to watch. Here is another of the tailess one.

My dad has a fish like that, after it's tail got bit off, it was upside down and all red looking. It's still alive this day. Nice pictures...as always

First: Brichardi aren't stupid - they just like having big families at your expense!

Second: No, the neo's aren't very colourful, but they're still very nice looking! The fry are adorable

Yeah, it's all the way up to his dorsal and anal fins....it is quite a bit. He seems happy though.

So, are all the babies males and that's why they have soooooo much more color to them or is it just that they will lose that blue coloring over time??

The blue is from the flash actually...they don't seem to have that color naturally.
