Hi and thanks for reading. My wife has a blue betta that we think has gotten fin rot. I have attached before and current photos. She has cleaned the tank and then separated the betta as well. She has been using an antibacterial treatment and aquarium salt. The fish started doing better at first, but now has gotten worse again.

If anyone has ANY suggestions, please let us know ASAP! This is one of her first fish and she loves it a lot.

Thanks in advance!
-James

Poor fish!!!!

When you say you have seperated him....was he in with other fish before? I'm not expert on meds and you should wait for some proper advice, but keep the water ultra-clean and maybe try some Melafix?!?!?!!? [probably a half dose]

There is a form you can fill in at the top of the page that will help others to help you more efficiantley [sp]

Good luck

can you take a photo from above, as its looks like his scales may be slightly sticking out, does he look like a pinecone when you look at him from above?
If so he has drospy, you could try internal bacteria meds and an epsom salt bath but dropsy is a hard one to treat......can you confirm the scales sticking out for us, then hopefully Wilder will be along to help......

not sure I would use melafix on a fish that sick, its really only something to aid healing once he's cured, not really a treatment.

agreed to NOT use melafix in this case.
it seems you are doing everything right. how is the fish now? is it eating at all? anything else of note to include? any sores or leisions? white fluff or fuzz? look at the fish from the top down. are his scales sticking out like a pine cone?
if it is indeed finrot, the meds and salt should help. treat for the FULL course of meds. sometimes meds can kick the fish's little behind and make him even more lethargic etc. its like when we have a flu or other ailment and dont feel ourselves, take antibiotics and still feel crappy (sometimes even worse) for a few days and then wake up one day and feel much better. that might be the case with the fish...also he wastaken out of "his" tank and might be moping a bit...happens often with bettas.
do you have an airstone or anything in the tank with him to increase aeration? best to do so when using meds. is he struggling to get to the top for air? if so, lower the water level in the tank a bit to make it easier for him. adding some live plants will help him and make him feel more comfortable.
is the qtank heated? can also make bettas more lethargic at lower temps.
just keep a good eye on him and test his water. do appropriate water changes to keep it really clean and keep up with the meds until he goes thru a whole round. sometimes you need to treat twice.
best of luck! keep us posted.
