Eheim 2078

Finally got my Eheim 2078 last week after being let down by an online store. Also purchased a Vecton 2 400 UV lamp with it.
When the filter arrived I was in the throes of the biggest pea souper I have ever had in a tank. Four days later and the tank is sparkling.
The Eheim is certainly not silent - it is noisier than I expected it to be. However it is quieter, even when going at full tilt, than the Rena XP3 it replaced. The flow rate is very easy to adjust and I tend to turn it down to just below the factory setting of 700 lph when I am sitting reading in the living room. I turn up the flow rate when I retire for the day. This makes it worth the money - more manufacturers might want to take note!
It is a nice piece of kit.
The only disappontment is the fixed pipework supplied. The inlet "U" bend is fine but the outlet "U" bend is less useful. I ended up using the outlet from the Rena because it was easier to get the spray bar where I wanted it.
I transferred the medium from the Rena to the Eheim so that it was ready cycled.
Can't really see the need for the extra functions yet but time will tell.

Ya, the stock piping on the Eheims sucks the big one.

I could get a couple of 'upgrade kits' for mu 2013. You may be able to get something similar for yours.

And also, your tank looks great.

Thanks - it makes things really worthwhile when the tank really takes off.
Difficult to photograph tank during the day because of the reflection from the outside wndow during the day.
During the evening my good lady gets in the way!
Neither of the lenses on my camera has a decent macro function for getting decent sized fish close-ups.
I don't mind the Eheim tubing because none of it shows apart from the "U" bend inlet in the tank.
As I said in the original post the Rena pipe system is far better.

For sure.

I have both an Rena XP3 and an Eheim 2213 so I know what you mean.

Today I priced out the intake tube kit at Big Al's and they wanted $35!!! For plastic! That's about 1/3 the price of the filter.

I'm in the wrong business...

their are 2 reasons it may not be that silent

1. you are pumping water down below the filter head to the UV
2. it looks like you have a qink in the intake pipe that would stave the filter of water

Yeah... my one is more or less absolutely silent. the only sound you can hear from it is a slight hum and rush of water if you put your ear onto it.

How high it it having to pump the water?
Also... I'm thinking that the UV is probably restricting the water flow, which would make it louder. Have you tried it without?

Great filter too eh?? I'll promise you, the "clean me" light is a great addition. And this filter can go for a LONG time without needing to be cleaned. Great work from Eheim.

i run mine from new until last week 5 months still no clean me light and i run mine flat out at 1850 lph

Thanks for the replies. They raise some interesting points:
1. The angle of the photo seems to suggest a kink in the pipe but in reality there is no flow restriction.
2. The Vecton is rated up to 1300 lph so it is only going to restrict the flow when it's going flat out which I don't tend to do.
Haven't run iit without the Vecton in line now that the water is sparkling I may just do that. I'll need to get more tubing before I can try that. No rush.
3. An interesting comment about the nlet height of the Vecton being below the Eheim pump causing increased noise. I hadn't thought of that. The Vecton is huge. and there is no way it can fit inside the cabinet any higher. This might be a reason for running it only when needed. I hate to think of the mess of pipework and valves which would be needed to put it onto a parallel T so that there are 2 outlets. I think I prefer simplicity and will get a separate spare pipe. I have to confess that I did not realise the Vecton would be so large when I purchased it.

you need to turn on the UV on 24/7 thats the way they work the bulbs are rated for a certain lenght of time 6 months or 1yr depending on which bulb you have

parasites and algue dont sleep and if you only turn it on when you think you need to its probably to late buy that point

Yeah, mine is much, much smaller, a model 2222, and only running 4 months now, but I can report that it is still completely silent, almost eerie. You can't even feel any vibration with your hand on the pump head. Only if you lift the spray bar or something like that do you find that yes, there is water moving at a furious rate.
