Was feeling stressed out from work, so I decided to pay each of my fish a visit to relax. As I approach Gir I noticed that he took a bit of small corrals from his substrate and spitted it out. So I figured he was hungry and threw him in a pellet (and wound up giving the whole bunch a pellet).

Checked him out though and he has a nice round tummy and is fed 4-5 pellets 2 times a day. Fish underfed or is he yanking my chain?

As long as you feed them multiple times a day, they shoudl be fine.

How big are the pellets (if they are hikari, then I would say 5 should be enough).

Do you feed blood worms and brine shrimp, too? They eagerly gorge on those foods.

If there is one thing that can say I am for absolute CERTAIN about concerning Betta's...it is that they will eat and eat and eat and eat...until they pop. Especially if it something they REAALLY like lol.

Their diet consist of 4-5 Hikari Bio Gold pellets (5-6 for the Jumbo Plakats) twice a day. 1-3 a week they have brine shrimp or bloodworm.

I don't think him picking at the substrate necessarily means he's hungry... just that he'd eat if he happened to find something. I've noticed my bettas picking at anything that looks even remotely like food right after a feeding! From what you've said, you're feeding them enough... no worries ;)

thats strange, i used to feed mine everyday and they would always die, now i feed them once every 3-4 days and ive had them for over a year.

Thanks. Yes I guess they are voracious creatures and will never know when enough is enough.

Maybe they are bored lol...and picking thru the gravel is like treasure hunting

My betta, Herme, likes to eat the bubbles from the Bubble Wand, then spits them out...lol.
