This is a short, haha I hope, reply from the young man that I got my little "yellow long fin plakats" from. Basically, he said what I surmised and, I think it was, ral commented, too.

Here it is:

Hey there,

Thankyou for sharing your hobby with me. I have never seen a beautiful tank like yours before. It its so clear and lively. I am glad your fish is doing great.

And yes, alot of Betta Hobbiest did talk alot about me. The truth is that we as Kids in Thailand grew up calling these Plakat, even though they have short or long tail. Just like in the US, where hobbiest can call them whatever they feel the color represents. I did made a mistake by putting them in the Plakat section.

Anyway, take care

I was sorry that people gave him a bad time. In my opinion, it is hubris and ethnocentricity to be unable to communicate with others in this kind of situation. He sounded to me as if it caused him shame and embarrassment. What should have been a pleasant experience was tarnished for him.

Here is his second reply when I asked to post his answer:

Hi there,

No, I don't mind if you post my Plakat question/answer. Go ahead and tell Betta Hobbiest that Plakat is a common name that people use in Thailand. Though many breeders wants their stock to be the best for show and business so they developed new names to make theirs look better. But I have to accept what other Hobbiest say to, because I did listed under the wrong catagory for auction.

Anyway, thanks for sharing information with me. And I'm gald that you are a Betta Hobbiest too. I will let you know if their is any other beautiful betta around that will be perfect for you tank. Good luck, and keep in contact.

What a nice young man! And I think his error may have actually been an honest mistake. Names of tropical fish are changed all the time based on geographical locations, and I'm not even talking about bettas. My father used to call mollies "molinesias", which is what they called them in Cuba. I'm glad you were able to get that situation straightened out and it was very nice of him to allow his responses to be displayed in TFF.

Yes, if I had not felt he was a nice young man, I would not have done buisiness with him. I still don't know what my Long Tail plakats really are. I asked but he missed that question in his answer. The yellow has a boy so I will see, but the platinum is what she is.

Betta sp. is their scientific name. In Thailand/Malaysia/Cambodia they were called "Fighting Fish" or Plakat/Plakad in Thai.

As the long fin developed the others got names based on their tail types... VT, HM, CT... etc.

But all Betta sp. are actually "Plakats". In Tha sites you will see to them refer to the Plakat as the short fin sometimes because:

Plakat Morh = Shortfinned fighting fish
Plakat cheen = long finned fighting fish

For the rest of the world.... Plakat means short finned.

That's what I suspected the problem was, just a misunderstanding. He seems like a very nice person :)
If I remember correctly, the fish you got from him are veils, jollysue

If you don't mind, folks, I'm going to post a copy of this thread to Huaj Vaj.
