No aggression in the 1st 5 minutes, but everyone is curious, even the Cory’s

I like your tank! I'm not sure what a gold acara is. I searched & got different fish...

I guess they are actually listed as yellow acarras ( Aequidens metae )... FOB is short for "fresh out of bag" so usually no coloration yet...

… and while it’s not going around breaking anyone’s fins… it is bossier than anyone else in the tank… so everyone is steering clear of him right now… and he hasn’t figured out where he thinks he wants to hang out, still exploring… so he’s moving everyone around… the Angel seems to be allowed to still mostly hang in the middle… the fish most "put out" by the newcomer, is the biggest electric blue, which is bigger, but so far, is avoiding the new fish as best it can

So, when I say everyone ( above ) we’re just talking Cichlids… the Cory’s don’t respect anyone’s petty politics, and neither do the Pleco’s or Oto’s, and the new acarra , isn’t incessantly chasing anyone… it just seems like it doesn’t like anyone in it’s personal space, and it hasn’t decided where it wants to hang yet

My new Pelvicachromis pulcher Ndonga has kicked out several Anomalochromis thomasi from the left third of the tank. The a. thomasi thought they owned that space since they occupied it for a month before p pulcher was introduced. But now there is a new boss.

Those now smallish metae can get quite big - bigger than I'm seeing online although one site admits to 18cm being possible. Acaras are very heavy bodied fish, and with the exception of those strange, not typical electric blues, can be very aggressive. I used to unpack a lot of metae, and some of the special order ones were huge. They would own a 6 foot tank, no questions allowed.

The largest electric blue, while being less than 6 inches long, is more than an inch thick, across the shoulders, ( as seen in the 1st picture in this thread )... so way bulkier than they look... but they are "hippies", avoiding any confrontations if at all possible... certainly not a typical Cichlid trait...

Interestingly in the 2nd picture on the left side, half way up, you can see the 2 female Apistos... they don't hang together, but are cordial... the male is in front of the hollow log, below them... so far the seller, selling them in groups of 3, has not be catastrophic...

Yellow, may have to go… no harmony in the tank , the dynamic is out of whack… may rehome it to the pet store… timing is everything thing… I’m in the middle of about 20 projects, that need to be done before snow, outside, or I’d consider restarting one of the 30 gallons, as the yellow has been on my list for a long time… but, I’ve been thinking those as breeding tanks, and today is moving day for the Tin Foils… at least there is peace this morning, at least right now…

Those electric blues, sure don’t act like a Cichlid, and I hate seeing them get bossed around so much… angel fishes top fin is a little tattered, otherwise everyone looks ok yet, just stressed out…

Electric blues are weird. I don't what they've done to them to get the colour, but it seems to have a side consequence of passivity and behaviour not like the species that have been modified. When you see a blood parrot, it wants to murder everything but its mouth is so deformed it can't. But the electric blue designer fish look normal, but something is missing. It's convenient for us, but it's intriguing as an unintended consequence.

The yellow, hasn’t colored up, anymore, from its FOB condition… it looks like a chunkier Cupid, with an extra dot/ stripe, mid body, and less color around the back dot, maybe a little pale yellow in the fins and tail, so far not tempting me to make a place for it

Yellow Acarra got moved to one of my holding tanks… no more feeder guppy tank… instant peace in the Cichlid tank… so, all the fish are in the bottom 3/4 of the tall 45 gallon… I’d like to add something to the top 8 inches of tank ( I also pulled those problem Chinese Evergreen out ) so the top looks bare…

I had a couple thoughts…

1st was a smaller school of Green line tetras ( Iguanodectes spilurus )
2nd was a small group of American Flag Fish ( Jordanella floridae )

The Iguanodectes spilurus look much different than the other fish n the tank, but are native to that area…and the Jordanella floridae actually look like a Cichlid, so they would look like they belonged, even though they are a Florida Killifish

I see they are new in stock at Wet Spot...

I'm going to count my blessing with that tank, & try and restrain myself for ordering any more Cichlids for that tank... been thinking a few bigger surface tetras, just to occupy that empty space... but "no more Cichlids"... at least until the next one
