Yay, New Fish!

There are quite a few Japanese words for the koi color patterns because the fish were first developed in Japan. There are some with orange at both ends and light in the middle, some with the patterns shown and some that are just the opposite where the back part is orange and the front is light. There are even some with orange in the middle. It turns out that the location of the orange is not determined genetically in a way that you can just take two swords that are orange at each end and expect that pattern to carry into the next generation. Instead you will get most of the color patterns in the next generation. The orange and light color being mixed is a genetic pattern but we don't know how to predict or control what part of the fish gets the orange color.
 
Cool, I didn't know that, and I've been breeding koi swordtails for a while. :)
