Some people (including me) wash it in a bucket for a little while and give up.

Put it in the tank and there are no tannins.

Two of the four pieces have sunk now. Last two bits are still hanging in there.

So I've chucked it in the fish pond and will wait for it to sink before I position it in the tank
It's too late now but that may not have been the best thing to do. You don't know what type bacteria or parasites that could attach to the wood and you move from the pond into your tank. That is the main reason people suggest boiling the wood before putting it in the tank, so you kill all the baddies that may be on it.

The pond is brand new, only just filled up, no fish. I can not boil it after, its too big, but I could pour boiling water over it.

I fully understand the problems of boiling wood. Most of us don't have pots that will hold a 3' long piece of wood. Pouring boiling water over it may be worth doing. Even though there aren't any fish in it, there could still be problems from birds, bugs, etc that got into it.

Quote from this article "Why Do Fish get Sick?":

"We have had people call and say "We've had a Koi pond for years and never had a disease problem until now". Well, sounds like they have taken good care of their fish all these years, but all that needs to happen is a bird shows up one day that has septicemia, and drinks out of the waterfall. Ten days later the fish all have red streaks in them, and you must treat with an antibiotic to cure the problem."

Not saying that's going to happen, just pointing out the possibilities.
