would a flood light work for my aquarium for plants? there's this flood light at costco for 9.99. On the box it says it uses 65watts, 6500k, and says its light is just like the sun for color rendering. total brightness lumens is 8905 if that matters. it says that uses 65watts, but is same as the 500watts halogens ,my dad says it'll be too bright, but i'm not sure, that's why im asking here. This will be on a 40gallon tank. i will be planting with medium light plants.

the flood light is a rectangle pretty much, and i'll be making a hood for my tank. im not going crazy on plants in my tank, so, just curious if this'll do. thanks

well, i just bought it, hooked it up, and its a lot brighter than my old 20w t12 light. this light seems to be true sunlight light like it says. all the colors are great :)

only downside is that the center of my tank gets a bit more light than the sides, but still a lot better than before.

Sounds like a great light. I am always looking for similar lights when I enter a hardware store.

the increase in light might grow some algae for now, you might want to add some fast growing plants for now..

Get 2 more!! :D

Then you'll be running nearly 5wpg, get a riccia lawn going. :)

Is that a typo? Should that be 805 or 905?
no, no typo.. thats what it says on the box. And this light is damn bright for 65watts. On the box it says...

Ballast Type : electronic
Brightness lumens per watt : 137
Photopic Lumens per watt : 70
Light Quality (CRI) : 84
Night Vision : excellent
Rustproof Weather Housing : yes

Total Brightness Lumens : 8,905
Total Photopic lumens : 4,550

Sounds dubious to me as well. Fairly low CRI for a 6500K as well. Interesting though.

Sounds like a great cheap way to get high wattage and lumens. Only concern for you would be replacing the bulb every few weeks/months since its not fluorescent. Wish you luck in your plant-growing.

Is that a high output compact fluorescent? I've heard of 65W CPF flood lights before, but haven't seen them. What is the shape of the bulb itself? For the price, this intrigues me.... I'm currently setting up a new hood epuipped with 8x 23W CPF's (1650 Lumens per bulb) for my 30G, but I'd settle for adding a couple of those if they are fluoro's rather than use 2x Bathrom 4-light strip lights.

Who wants high wattage? High wattage = expensive electricity and does nothing to determine how much light output there is....

Whats the PAR value?

It sounds identical to a massive compact fluorescent I saw at home depot a month or so ago. I was thinking about getting it but it was too expensive and far mor light than I needed for my 20gal.

Turns out I saw it at lowes, here

I have seen these lights before, and it seems tempting. I prefer the better coverage of a longer bulb, even if I am sacrificing lumens somewhat.

The color temperature looks good to me. Give it a go, you'll never know until you try. I'm growing aquatic plants well on a CF desk lamp, so CFs can work very well. I like my t5s better, though.

If you've got a picture, I'd love to see. I'm assuming it's like the one linked by KraKen, but I'd like to know for sure.
