Tap water has average

Well seeing we have soft water i though about stocking these fish gradually  over the next 6 months or so.

7-9 harlequin rasboras

5-7 Cherry barbs

2-3 sparkling or croaking Gourami

tank 70 lites with internal 280 filter but i plan to eventually get a bigger canister or HOB filter as I start to increase the bioload and i intend to grow a moss carpet on mesh and have planted java fern and anubius on mopani bogwood.

is this ok ? any other suggestions or fish that may do better in my water

I would choose either the harlequins or cherry barbs. Having both would overstock your tank. I would personally go with 8 rasboras and 3 sparkling gouramis.

My personal opinion is while a tank with 6 cherrys, 6 harlequins and 3 sparkling Gouramis would be heavily stocked it would not necessarily be over stocked if you had sufficient filtration and you performed weekly 30-50% water changes - assuming that it is a fully cycled tank and stocking is done over a few months.

The barbs may eat up the gourami's fins as well. You know, as always, depending on the fish.

In my experience cherry barbs are one of the least aggresive fish around so if kept in a shoal of 6 I personally can't imagine an issue with fin nipping

They are certainly no tiger barbs

hi thnx ,

well the reason i say cherry barbs and harlies is i already have 3 harlies and 1 cherry barb, long story short well the pet shop didn't have any more harlies and said cherry barbs would be ok alone , which i know is not true after doing some research.

also my tank isn't yet cycled so i can't add any other barbs or harlies yet but will have to build their numbers up when it is established.
so IF they all make it through the cycle then i have no choice but to add me=ore harlies and cherry barbs.

so maybe i'll just have to get a school of each and forget bout the gouramis.

is it over stocked because of filtration or just because it's a small tank ?
well obviously as its not cycled i'm doing 2 pwc per day now of about 25 % and intend to do at least one 25 % every week once its established

I have various barbs, the only barbs that fin nip are tiger barbs and versions of it, such as albino tiger barb. The vast majority are fine. I have cherrys, 5 baded and Odessa, none find nip.

As for stocking it would be full to over stocked in a 70 litre, but like others have said you could do it if you keep up with regular large water changes.

I wouldn't add more than 6 of each in that size of tank.

Personally, I would say that stocking is absolutely fine! So long as you stock slowly (2 weeks between species at least) and test your water, if it doesn't hold ok then you lower stocking plans..

The only condition is that your ammonia and nitrite are 100% "0" before ANYTHING goes in!

Edit: I like this stocking as you have considered fish personalities and locations in the tank for a nice combo :)

Gouramis = top (middle-->top)
Harlequins = middle
Cherry Barbs = lower third of tank (def have lots of plants real or fake and rocks/ornaments etc as they will be happier and colour better)

Oh i didn't know that about top middle and bottom lol, thanx
I mainly though those fish cause my tank P.H is usualy under 7 p.h and my water is soft so i read those conditions are good for blackwater fish.

And yes, I'm still going thru a cycle its only a new tank, the above is just my full stocking list that i intend to eventually have after maybe 6 months or so. I'm not rushing things just planning ahead.
