When they were first born, I had 9 healthy guppy fry. 1 of them accidentally got squashed when I was cleaning the tank (I feel so guilty, poor little guy :-( ). However last week, one of the others took on a bent appearance, it look like it has been bent in the middle so now its tail sticks up in the air. It appears to be straightening out a bit now, but it hasn't changed in a couple of days. Now another one has the same problem but it has stayed bent. :-( They are both swimming and eating fine and interact with the other babies. What is wrong with them?? I can't face disposing of them humanely, (or any other way). Will they be ok if I leave them like this or is there anything I can do for them. They also appear to have ich, although there aren't many spots yet, so I have now treated the tank with Interpet Anti-Whitespot.
Please help me to help my poor babies :-( :-(

hi there phishphood

how old are your babies now, how often are you feeding them and with what, what sort of filtration in the tank, how often are you doing w/changes and have you tested your water since the babies were born?

as usual loads of questions but no answers yet :blink: ................but they will come soon

regards - sue

They are about 3 weeks, they are from 3 separate batches all born within a few days of each other. I changed the water yesterday. I tested the water last week, all was fine apart from the nitrates which were just about as high as they can get. I changed the water and added a live plant to try and get the nitrates down. I am due to do another test, but I haven't had time yet this week. I'll do it when I get home from school tonight.
I feed them on crushed flake food 3 times a day, and occasionally give them small amounts of tetra fresh delica bloodworm which they love.
It is a Sicce Moby Dick tank, so the filtration system is in the lid, its just a water pump with a big blue sponge, a small white sponge and a small wheel thing with sponges in it.

My water test results:

Nitrate= 100 mg/l still!! how can I get this down?
Nitrite= 0 mg/l
PH= 8.5 mg/l can I get this down too?
Ammonia= <0.3mg/l

I don't know what 2 do, now they're all hanging at the top doing nothing. I have and air curtain in their so its not lack of oxygen. Another of them has started going black, its only tiny tho, about 5mm long, none of the others have any colour yet.

HELP!!!!!

sorry about the delay phishphood - I'm on the other side of the globe

firstly - until the tank is sorted can you transfer the fry into a net/breeder thing in your other tank so long as the water is well cycled in there?

If you can't move them - I'd do water changes twice daily of about 20% being careful to match the temperature. You could add a small amount of salt (about an 1/8th of a teaspoon non iodized dissolved in water before adding) - cories don't like salt in the tank but should be ok with the smaller amount

You may need to cut the feeding back to twice daily and check the amount (apparently their tummy is as bit as their eye) - the babies won't grow as quickly but they will be ok.

I think in the little tank while you have the fry in it you are going to need to continue to do small daily water changes - I've got little tanks too and they foul very quickly when there is fry in there

I'm off to work now - talk to you later - sue

I had 3 of my guppy fry who were born normal looking after a week took on the bent appearance and laid at the bottom of the fry tank for almost a week straight.

After a week or so,they got up and started swimming-with difficulty- and eating again. They acted like they couldnt swim right...But they ALL grew out of it! I didnt lose one fry. They looked like they were bent in half for about 2 weeks and now theyre all 4 weeks old and totally normal and swimming great.

I dont know why it happens...Maybe theyll be okay. I sure hope they will be.

Thanx a lot guys, I'll see what I can do with them. Moving them is awkward cos theres nothing to attach the breeder net to in my other tank cos the rims funny. I'll do the water changes and raise the temp a bit to help get rid of the ich.
Cheers guys!
