Wondering About Hydroponic Aquariums...

I do know I can get a good fish tank AND STAND for the price of some of these, but my mother REALLY wants one, and by that I mean... REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY wants one. I might just gather some money and do it for Christmas for her instead of Mother's day because I'm a little short on money right now. I'm dying for a goldfish, but you're right, they do get very big. I might just go with 6 guppies for it if I DO do that. I think you can get a few more fish than normal for a 5 gallon because of the plants... I don't know. I'll try to do more research. But thanks for the replies!

Guppies are able jumpers. They need a lid. The space is too small... you are battling guppy aggression in a 10 gal, now picture that crammed into a 5 gal... :)

If the goal is a little 5 gallon tank, I think that you may be sadly disappointed in the options.  It really comes down to a betta or shrimp.

If you are thinking bigger... there's a great deal more creativity you could bring.  But a 5 gallon tank... they look nice in the magazines, etc.   But the science of what the fish really need just doesn't hold up to make it appropriate.

This is exactly what I agree with also.

A 5 gal shrimp or a single Betta set up is neat and can look stunning ;)

Of course, the bigger the tank, the more options will be made available for suitability of fish species.

That's the problem. I would absolutely LOVE to get a 10 or more gallon aquaponic aquarium, but I can't find one. While the sump might work, it seems almost to be more trouble than it's worth.

Not a bad effort I think, It has 1 Betta and about 10 Red Cherry Shrimp and is filtered by a little ClearView 100 - Aqua One
