It may just be me but I thought it was against animal rights to give fish as prizes at fairs?

My cousin just rang me up in a panic at a fair in Cheltenham Race Course where her sister-in-law "won" a goldfish for my cousins 2 year old son! I now have it here in a 2ft hospital tank with a mature filter (running as a spare in another tank for a year)

I know this tank isn't ideal for him, I'm not planning on keeping him there, it's just alot better than a 5 litre round bowl :)

Nope, still not illegal in the UK.
Only illegal to be given to children under 16.
As apparently on your 16th birthday you magically acquire the skills to look after animals.

The only adjustment they made to the law (and council guidelines) is that the fish must also be supplied with a permanent home (lol read mini pet aquarium) and food.

i.e. you can win the fish, but cannot take it unless you also purchase these items from the vendor.

My sister came home from a fair yesterday with one becasue her bf had hooked a duck.

should be made illegal, not fair on thf fish and not fair on the people getting ripped off when they have to sell you the mini tanks

dam right wrong

I was shocked to find that the local fair was still "selling" these poor goldfish. My bosses 5 year old grandson won one, when I asked his father if he would like me to bring some tap water conditioner in for them to use, he replied "No thanks. It's not hard is it. Just replace water from the tap. Hopefully it'll die soon anyway."

I was pretty upset :( The attitude towards goldfish is awful. My boss then went on to tell me how they'd won a goldfish years ago which survived in a tiny bowl for 8 years. "We tried everything to kill it- over feeding, not changing the water, leaving it in direct sun light. The d*mn thing just wouldn't die!" It took a lot for me to just keep my mouth shut :(

I can't believe that people can't/won't see that these are living, breathing animals. They wouldn't treat a dog or a cat like that, would they?

that the attitude of people to day
and yes they do treat dogs and cats
the same way and get away with it
makes me sick

The amazing thing is that some people have kept Goldfish in unfiltered bowls for years on end. But it is still wrong and unfair to give Goldfish away at... fairs.

What I meant was that "normal" people would never treat other animals like that, so why the exception when it comes to fish? :( My bosses in general were really good people, not malicious in anyway, so it saddened me even more when they said those things. And I really don't get it- the guy had the perfect opportunity to teach his kid to look after and respect animals, but no... :(

It makes me sick too :( I just can't understand it.

It is very sad :( I feel sorry for the little ones being brought up in that kind of atmosphere.

Children, given the chance and the right help and teaching usually turn out to marvellous fishkeepers; I've had my son in tears this morning 'cos one of his tiger barbs has died and he thinks it might be his fault, and my nearly 6 year old daughter knows most of my fishes Latin names and the importance of water changes etc.

well, I dont know about wining fish, but as a gift I bought
3 betta, 3 5 liter mini tanks, 3 biotopol mini things and 3 tubs of food

Quick guide on how to care for fish
by agus

there are 3 main things that affect the health of your betta fish. the water quality, the lighting and heating and the feeding of your fish. these are the three main things you will have to maintain to keep a healthy fish. fish disease is another, more rare subject. if you ever feel your fish is sick, just tell me, I will be happy to help.

1) water condition:
the ecological cycle in a tank is the cycle from when the fish poops, to the poop being "eated" by bacteria on the gravel
and converted to a deadly posion to another set of bacteria converting that chemical into a less lethal one. as your small tanks do not have a filter, the cycle for your tank stops at the point of bacteria eating some of the poop and converting it. what you need to do to ensure that the water quality of the tank is good, you must net out excess poop with a net and you must change the water in the tank by a MAXIMUM of 25% per week. you should only exceed this amount if the water is in very bad quality or your fish is pale, sick or highly stressed. to change the water, simply take the top of the tank of , take a cup or similar object and remove water. then insert new, fresh water from sink into tank. never directly remove or insert water into and from sink and tank.
before you insert more water into tank, use JBL Biotopol (came with tank) and insert 1 drop of biotopol per glass or 150 ml of water.

2) lighting and heating:
your tank should always be inbetween 21 degrees celcius and 24 degrees. it should never be placed next to a window or heater. Your tank should recieve a minimum of 8 hours of direct light per day and a strict maximum of 13 hours of light per day. As I myself go to bed very late, i set my aquarium light to turn on at 10 am and off at 10 pm. like this, the fish may live with my nocturnal lifestyle. it would be very usefull to place the tank under a powerful light, as long as the light is not on for longer than 12 hours per day, since it is powerful.

3) feeding:
your fish should be fed once a day, in the morning. it does not matter if they are fed with or without lights on. they should be fed a very little amount, about as much as a pinch of salt, or when you hold a salt pitcher sideways and tap it so a very little amount of salt, or in this case fish food, comes out. there should be one day a week every one or two weeks in which you do not feed your fish to induce a natural environment. if you over feed your fish by accident, you may easily net out extra fish food and then throw it away. do not put it back in the tub of fish flakes.

I hope you enjoy your betta spllendens fish, also commonly known as siamese fighting fish. if you ever want to buy more fish, a female could fit in the tank with the male, but another male would fight to death with your fish. females have shorter fins and are slightly less colorful. they cost 10 CHF in any fish shop. if you have any questions, just reply to this message with your question.

They know of no other conditions. It's not like they are being caught wild or anything. But it is still wrong!

James.

3 5 liter mini tanks

3.5 litre's isn't big enough, just in my opinion. That's not even one single gallon of water.

You forgot no.4 which is
4. Never keep Bettas in tank of less than 17 litres, remember, Bettas need space to swim. A 3.5 litre tank is too small for Bettas and you'll probs be stunting their growth

no I meant 3 times 5 liter tanks! each tank is 5 liters, and theres three of them
and I actually think its more than 5 liters, the tanks are same as my hospital tank so
I measured and they are 25 cm * 15 * 15
I would never be so mean to betas! :fish:

And as for carlovel1, I dont mean to get on your bad side,
but I did the reasearch, and a beta can live a happy life alone in a 5 liter tank,
with no side effects, as it says here
