Will fish go up filter intake

I have a fluval 107 on my 70 litre tank the flow lever is half way, I have celestial pearl danios, and Ember Tetras, will these fish be okay or will I have to put a sponge on the inflow pipe, something I really don't want to do, I would rather just leave it clear.

It's a good idea to put a sponge over the filter intake strainer to stop small fish getting sucked up

Thanks I have already done this. But I saw a post on the net, where it said this can damage your filter.

If you use a course sponge and clean it under tap water each week it won't affect the filter and should increase it's life by preventing big things entering the impeller area

It's also excellent to prevent sand reaching the motor / impeller.

The way a sponge can hurt the filter is if it restricts flow; this will cause more friction on the magnet driven propeller which can increase heat as well as reducing cooling from flow of water. A very fine sponge or one that is clog will reduce flow.

I use a large sponge from swiss tropical - i forget if it is 20 ppi or 10 ppi; not too expensive if ordering other stuff but otherwise a bit pricey with cost of shipping.

Hi, I recommended this before to you. It is what I used. You can pick what coarseness you want from the options on the page. They have 3 options to pick from, the over 40 gallon one is the coarsest.

The above suggestion has different inserts to fit the end of the pipe and will place the prefilter away from the glass too.

Use the Poret 10 ppi for pre-filters. I use the 20 ppi for almost anything else. Poret if the foam sold by Swiss Tropicals. I also use a few of the ATI prefilters. They come in 3 sizes and have a set of adapters included.

Yea i have those - they don't last on an fx6.... HOWEVER on a 40B with a fluval 107 they should be fine. On an fx6 the intake force is just too strong over a long period of time. The 4x4x8 cube i use now (from swisstropical) does much better over long periods HOWEVER a 40b isn't large enough for something that large (I use it in a 120 which is much taller).

Yes, I use it on my 65 gallon display tank with a Fluval 407, and these are no problems for me. The over 40-gallon option has coarse sponge that works great for my 407. I agree with you, I wouldnt try it on a Fx6.
