Will A Betta Eat A Baby Guppy?

Hi everyone,

Today I brought home a 1/3-1/2" long guppy fry from the pet store.

My question is I have a *female* betta with a smaller mouth and she still has problems eating betta pelets (I crush them up for her), so what are the odds she'll eat the little guppy? I did also purchase a breeder net but with the net I can't see the little fish swimming. (the tank is 10-gallons and also has three Rasboras)

No i wouldnt risk it, even if she cant fit it into her mouth she still could harm the guppy. I would put the guppy in a breeding net in the tank, its the safest thing to do. Or put the guppy alone in another small tank.

Okay, thanks. I'll try putting it in my guppy tank inside a net. I hope it doesn't die. I'll be embarrassed next time I go into my shop because there was a "not for sale" sign for the fry so I had to kind of beg them to sell it to me.

Why would it die lol? It will be fine in a breeding net aslong as the guppy has enough room to swim. Just makesure no other fish can get into the breedint net, he'll enjoy other fish swimming around his net.

(okay, I just had to add, I'm the one with the three betta fish that are handfed and bite.) I just tried putting the plastic bag containing the fry in the female betta tank and she went ballistic and started biting the bag! So much for that idea. Then I moved the bag to my guppy tank and all chaos has broken loose there, as well. Both guppies are following the fish all over as it swims up and down. lol After it acclimates, it'll go into it's little net home. My husband is going to think I've lost my mind when he sees the itty bitty fish!

I think you wouldn't have a problem mixing them together. I have added bettas male and female in tropical tanks all the time and no problems occurred.

Just a quick update. I put the baby in my guppy tank and the two guppies in there have not tried to eat him. The only issue I'm coming across is how to feed the baby the brine shrimp (4X per day) without putting too much extra food in my tank. The baby is getting enough to eat, but my other guppies are eating the food too. . .My tank is crammed full of plants so unless I uproot them all, there isn't enough room to catch the baby in the net! It's kind of in there until it grows a bit bigger.

I guess I can try a turkey baster to suck up the extra food that sinks down?

Thanks. I hope he does well. One of the pygmies in that became ill yesterday and died (I euthanized him ). I don't have a hospital tank so everyone is still in the same tank. The fry is eating everything in site even finely crushed up flakes and also algae.

Hi,

Sorry you've had to endure watching your fish die. It's a terrible experience I would suggest googling fish euthanizia and decide which method you feel is most humane. I've read that clove oil will aid in the procedure.

What I think is the worst part is deciding IF the fish is truely sick enough to pass on or if there is hope. One of my bettas was looking poorly but since I could isolate him in a bowl, I treated and healed him. I do have kids and my fear is that they wake up to find a dead fish floating in the tank and possibly having been pecked on by other fish in the tank so at some point I DO have to decide what would be best.
