I keep hearing thigs like "let me guess u got it from walmart" from complet strangers. Just to say my breeding crown tail buetiful female was from walmart. I dont know about every walmart but my local walmart gets an A on pet care. I always see ct males and they only get ct females. I even once saw a new moon. NOt all Walmarts were created equal! lol :p

This thread will be locked by wuvmybetta soon... if you don't know why, check the thread on the top of the page called, "from now on".

It's too bad they aren't all created equal, so they could all be like yours. i have two within 15 minutes of me, and they should not be allowed to sell live animals. I got my boy Rico, and my boy Wally from there, and they are really cute. All of my VT's have come from there, but every one of them had fin rot when I bought them. Consider yourself lucky that yours only sell CT's b/c mine sells them now too, but still sell vt's, which means that the vt's are shoved to the back even more now.

Yeah, there is no such thing as a new moon betta as far as I know, if I'm wrong of course let me know! They probably mean Halfmoon, but honestly from walmart it's very unlikely that it was HM.

Though it's nice to hear that they take such good care of their fish, having been laughed at by staff in a pet store when I showed concern for a poor fish (wasn't a betta by the way) that had somehow gotten into the plant display I love to hear any news that there are some places that care for their animals.

I sincerely doubt you would see a real halfmoon at walmart. Those are show bettas, the kind that go for $20-$60 on the internet. Even if your walmart gets local breeder culs, like is probably how this one gets crowntails, no breeder is going to cull a halfmoon.

That's like a dog breeder getting the perfect puppy and saying "Well, this puppy is absolutely perfect. I could sell him for $500 dollars, or donate him to the Humane Society for someone to adopt. Hmmm, decision decisions..."

I have no idea what a NEW moon is suppoed to be. I haven;t seen it on the IBC website or listed with wny of the breeder sites. I can't even imagine what it would look like. What is a new moon? Possibly something new or possibly some breeder making somehting up to reel in peoplewho have heard half moon and might think that the new moon is something special too.

Anyway, if you see a betta in the store and like him, get him. Don't worry about type or pattern.

I'll say what I have to say before this topic is locked by the queen (or king...not too sure what "they" are so I'll call them "it"...LOL :p ) of lock-i-ness...
My favorite LFS told me that they had more then 20 people come in, to buy a betta, because they had bought a betta and Walmart and they all died. I haven't had any luck with bettas from there, but I know people that have. Maybe it was just a bad stock they got in, but I thought that was kind of weird.

Honestly, it's not their bettas that are unhealthy. It's the fact that they don't have people who know enough about fish to keep them healthy at most of the stores. I have 3 WalMart bettas and they're all perfectly healthy. I'm not hating on all Walmarts, because ours is getting better (no more Ich infestations and such). Just gotta get the word to corporate that they need to get someone to take better care of them. Fish need love too. :)

i don't think that most people think walnart bettas are "bad". more that they are not well cared for/unhealthy, most likely not well bred/inbred and you have no idea what type of bloodlines you are getting.
for those reasons, they are not usually recommended for breeding, but they do make great pets/rescues.

I think the 'newmoons' are deltas or superdeltas. That is what I have seen advertised as 'new moons' in pet stores. But new moon is not a recognized tail type.

Walmart bettas aren't bad, but walmart is a suermarket. They have a bad rep with fish, they are better with products, and most of them treat fish like products, replaceable, reuseable. Just like everything else, there are exceptions.

wow. $500 for a healthy pet quality dog from a good breeder is a good deal. The perfect puppy, depending on breeds would be $900 to $3000 but I seriously doubt that anyone worthy of breeding dogs wouldn't want to incorporate that into their own breeding program.

Actually, I find that Walmart bettas (atleast in my area) are weak and more likely to get a disease, and have trouble fighting it off. I think this is because they are breed like dogs in puppy mills, they aren't taken care of properly even before they come to the store to be sold. Walmart employees who don't feed them and don't change their water just make them worse. The LFS I was talking about said they get atleast one mad costumer that tells them about how the Walmart bettas don't live long, every week.

Like I said earlier I have 7 Walmart bettas, 5 veils and two crowntails. One veil I've had for 10 months. The others I'v had anywhere from 9 months to 1 week. Since I started my betta keeping hobby in August I have not had one betta die on me, and the only problems I've had with them is fin rot. So far so good for me. Even though my WM conditions are horrible, it seems that I got most just in time, before they were in too bad of shape to be helped.

Personally - unless there are dire conditions and a betta needs a good home from somewhere else... I won't ever buy one that doesn't come from WalMart.

Almost all my fish have come from WM. I have to say that they're some tough little buggers. With what they have had to go thru to get to that shelf, they're amazing little creatures.

For the most part, anyone that had a remote chance of surviving... has. Even the horribly sick ones.

I agree with what's already been said - it's not the fish - it's the way they're kept. It's no wonder they don't live long after they're brought home. They're stressed to the max and sometimes it just takes its toll. It's such a shame, really, because the fish always get the bad name. When it's WalMart itself.
