Why Do You Keep Fish?

I just love there movement, coulour and general livleyness. And the look of a great community

According to her indoors it's to keep me out of trouble - 'perhaps that's why I've been allowed so much so far without too much dispute :)

But to me I just love them, the different little characters, the fantastic colours, always seeing new behaviour and just generally having something great that doesn't poop wreck your house like the cats do. I do love the challenge though of setting up and keeping the perfect environment along with the constant learning involved.

I could sit right in front of my tank for most of the day just gazing if I had the time!

My kids brought home a painted turtle. They then thought it would be a good idea to breed guppies to feed the turtle. We ended up keeping the fish because they are fun to watch and the turtle eats Natural Balance dog food. I'm in need of buying more as we went through a bout of ICH and lost all but 3 :-(
Yeaaah...I'm fairly worried about this turtle now.

Get yourself on a reptile forum (preferably)/the aquatic reptile section here and post exactly how you are keeping this turtle, with regard to tank size, lighting, feeding and filtration...

Turtles are a fairly specialist animal to keep, and I'm fed up seeing turtles wit serious health issues being given away because they "grew too big" or "the tank got too smelly".

Time to teach the kids some responsibility, learn with them and show them how to care for this turtle. That means no more dog food.

1. I've always been fascinated by worlds we don't encounter much everyday, like universe and the water world, its nice to learn more about them coz they live in a different world. I prolly gonna keep an alien in an aquarium if I can ( j/k...maybe not ) Plus its kinda like u created another miniworld in the form of an aquarium.

2. Nice to have another kind of life in your house that rely on u to survive, I feel like I got to get home early from work coz my fish is gonna get mad at me coz havn't turned the aquarium lights on yet :D I consider them pets.

3. I like decorating the Aquarium and enjoy watching them interact with other fish and their environment.

I guess I like more of the Science part of it than the Art.

1.i have always been attracted to fish
2. i have kept every type of pet ecxept for saltwater fish and amphibians so far
3. relaxing
4. they are not noisy and dont bite.
5. IMO low maintenence when it is mature.

theres too many reasons to actually get fish! im actually arguing with my parents that all they have to get me is 2 things, a fish tank and a speaking system for my computer. instead of just stuuf ill use then abandon ataround march.

I worked for about 10 years in the Scuba Diving industry and when I had to give it all up, I just couldn't bear not having underwater flora and fauna around, an aquarium seemed the way to go, but didn't want to go down the marine route after being with them for so long in their natural environment, tropical seemed the way to go. It's really relaxing too.

4. they are not noisy and dont bite.

You've never met my Danios then...

Every time I put my arm into the tank to do come cleaning, moving around etc, I have a whole gaggle of Zebra Danios, going near cross-eyed trying to nibble the teeny tiny moles that I have on my arm... Nippy little beggars, are my Danios!!

:hyper:

Why do I keep fish? My Dad had a tank when I was a kid and when one of my friends told me that her Dad had a tank up-for-grabs, I decided to have a go myself. So after some trial, error, crap advice from the LFS and then some GOOD advice from this forum, one year on I'm still enchanted by my lil' living world that sits on my sideboard and keeps me entertained for hours on end!!

:good:

It keeps me out of trouble  well that's what my wife says, she also says it stops me from being a miserable moaning old git .

I love the technical side of keeping fish and an Aquarium, reading about them and there habits. What can be thought of as tedious task by some, keeping the tank clean and set up nice I find as relaxing and therapeutic as watching the fish there antics and habits.

I am a Clown loach nut and addict :hey: :good: and these guys keep me constantly amused as do my panda Cory's and other fish .

The funny thing about it is that about 18 months ago I had no intention of getting a tank but my wife suggested it as a Christmas present, as every time we went to a local garden centre which had a tropical fish section I would always be drawn there and spend a ridiculous amount of time watching all the wonderful fish.

I am so glad she suggested it.
