Why Do We Name Or Bettas

Mine are;

5 black tetras - Jackson 5 (no individual names, just a group)
VT Male Betta - Miyagi
3 female bettas - Dolly, Molly, Polly
Catfish - Ceefa (as in C for cat, he was renamed)

To be honest, on Valentines day when Joshua took me to PetCo I didn't know what fish I was going to get, I wanted Bella, a very pretty pink and red female betta, and I decided she needed friends so i just told the lady to pick two more. I put them in a bowl (I know that's horrible!! trust me. but i changed the water everyday and kept it under a lamp.) Bella died:( because the blue fish the lady picked out was actually a male (which is funny because I named her lil joshua and jinxed myself) I still have Dory, the other original female, and Little Joshua. I bought three new females to start a sorority (that did not work, Ellie was beaten to death) So now they are all seperate. The conclusion to my story? I didn't know I was going to get Betta, but I was going to name every single fish I got, even if I couldn't tell the difference between them, I would have found a way:)

I have 3 male VT's called Smurf, Tex and Kaito. I think I name them because they all have different personalities and look completely different...unlike other tropicals I've kept in the past. Plus, I name everything and anything. ;)

I was sitting thinking earlier why people name there bettas but not other fish, I have a community tank and haven't named a thing in it apart from the 2 female Bettas and i've also named my 2 males is it because they are there own little people they seem to have there own personalities like Luda when i enter the room he swims to the front of the tank and paces it until i come over then he's quite happy to go back to patroling his tank or chill out in his coconut. Also what have you named your bettas and why ?

I name all of my fish!

In my Experimental Psychology class we were kind of talking about this- the professor told us that people like to name things (like their cat, dog, fish, guitar, car, etc) as well as say things like "my fish is really happy" or "the rain is out to get me" because it creates almost a soul-like entity for the animal, object, or nature (kind of like animism). And it gives some attachment for the person. And it's also fun.

Betta fish seem to have more of a personality than a goldfish (or so I've experienced) so that is why I named my betta and not my goldfish.

I named my betta Ivan and I am drawing a picture of him. :hyper:

It seems that a betta is more interactive with its owner than just during the normal feeding time.

I have named 4 fish. My first betta was called ghost because he was like "the ghost in the darkness"
I have a ton of mollies but have only named 2. One was called Special Ed. because when he was a baby he used to swim in loop-de-loops and in a corkscrew type motion(which he eventually outgrew as he got older). The other mollie is called bully (self explanitory). My plecostimus is called Pleco (real original with that one).

i think its because they all have different personalities just like people do and therefore have to be named

i name all my bettas, plecos and any other odd fish where i only have one

When I was a kid I use to name my goldfish too. But I think we name our bettas because they are so full of life (they live on their own) and they each have their own character. I have named all my bettas

(Sunset, Crumples, Midnight and Snowy)

I should name a betta frank =P i have no sence of humor
