Who's Eating My Fish?

Hi all
First post so forgive my ignorance! I've recently got a tropical tank and have been stocking it with fish (shop recommended) but someone in there keeps eating the others. I'm going to try attach some pics and I'm hoping an expert out there can tell me who the culprit is!
I also have a second problem, I got two (supposedly clown plecs) however I've been told they aren't clowns and will get too big for my tank, 125 litres. Can anyone tell me what they are from the pics?

Any help will be so appreciated.

Ruby barbs, rose barbs, clown plecs (supposedly), goramis (forgive spelling), mollys, a yellow barb (??). And some bigish tetras (over an inch).

hmmm by the sounds of it you have an "aggressive" fish tank set up with all your fish... now there could be lots of reasons why your fish are eating each other...

1. they are not fed enough
2. there are too many fish in the tank (its recommended for an adult fish ever inch of its body *not fins* has one gallon of water)

i have hear that barbs will group up with their own kind so rose barb stay together and ruby barb stay together etc and then they form a type of "gang" lets say and will attack other fish to gain territory. (barbs will also do this to their own kind if there are in larger numbers)



Rose barbs, Ruby Barbs and yellow barbs (probably a gold barb you got there) roughly get to 3 inches and are very aggressive

the Clown Pleco will roughly get to 4 inches and they are wood eaters... not big on eating algae if that was your idea of having one. not to sure on how aggressive these guys are but like any fish if they are not crowded and have enough food they should be no problem

Now for the Gourami it all depends on the breed some will only get 2 inches and others will get to 6 inches... also if you have a larger breed of gourami like a blue or gold gourami will get to 6 inches and are aggressive... but if you have a powder blue gourami then it is only 2inches and are hardly aggressive...

mollies will roughly get to 2 inches not aggressive

and for the tetra i'm guessing you have a jumbo neon tetra... and they can grow to 2 inches and are not aggressive

now you have a 125 liter tank.. (33 gallons) how many fish are in the tank?

What's the best plan, I've been told the more you have the less aggressive they are (currently have 3)? Or is it a better idea to give them away?

usually in pet stores the fish don't look like they are eating each other because they are new arrivals, dead or dying fish are usually removed only the strongest will survive. and the pleco.. always depends on the breed... if given the space will grow to the size...
are you new with fish tanks or have you had one before.. usually its trial and error.. but this site helps a lot with advice with problems that arise.

Pictures would help. IME tiger barbs are the only aggressive type of barb. There are also loads of different types of gouramis. But if it's a three spot gourami (sold as blue, gold, opaline, or platinum gourami) that's the most aggressive fish in the tank.

None of these guys would actively seek out smaller fish and kill and eat them. However, it's very possible the missing fish had died and the corpse was eaten by the tank mates.

There are also lots of different types of tetras. Identification is key. Some tetras are peaceful as can be, and other tetras love to murder things and eat their fins, sometimes their scales.

Barbs also do not normally create a gang and batter fish around. That's a really dumb thing to say. They school with others of their species just like other tetras do. IME tetras are more aggressive than most barbs. A lot of barbs are rather peaceful, but active, they lack teeth and don't tend to pick on fish for fun, unless they're tiger barbs.

There is also no difference between a "neon tetra" and a "jumbo neon tetra." "jumbo" is just the word used by petsmart to describe the size of the pet sold.

mollies can also be a lot more aggressive than some think. They are a bit territorial and will pester other fish. I wouldn't call them "peaceful" when people bring them back to to shop every other week cause it was trying to kill things. They can reach 4 inches, sometimes more.

The first pic is the plec that needs identifying if anyone can help? I'll also added a few photos of the other inhabitants, one of them must be the killer (it's like cluedo!!).

I know it's a bit spars at the minute but be assured I have more space themed hidey holes on order!

the pleco looks like a gibbiceps, it will get large, but not quite as big as a common pleco.

The tetras I see are black skirts, I see some mollies, a ruby barb, a gold barb.. No real killers, here. I'd think the deceased just died for unknown reasons and got eaten by the fish, maybe even sucked up by the filter.
